Hi. I have read that Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were/are linked/affiliated/associated with the bull, the lion, the snake and the eagle. Has anyone heard this before? And if so, can you please list which animal goes with which Gospel writer? And finally, how such associations cam about?
Thanks!

thank you, heterodoxus. Are there particular associations, like John is the Bull, Mark is the Eagle? etc?

Shux, I always associated The Gospel of John with a jackass! (Equus africanus, of course!)

Alright, here's the correspondences:
Matthew - Human Mark - Lion Luke - Bull John - Snake/Eagle MisterC, I didn't read the whole article/essay yet; I skimmed it. I have two questions: 1) where did these correspondences originate? who or what made them? 2) why does the author of that article/essay believe these need reassigning? on whose authority? (this is obviously related to the answer to the first question. And finally, I have heard of connection/symbolism of those same four animals with four particular qualities: Bull - Life Lion - Light Snake/Eagle - Love Human - Liberty Do you see any kind of correspondence then between?: Luke - Life Mark - Light John - Love Matthew - Liberty

Thank you, heterodoxus. I was puzzled as to where these things come from... I mean, I know it's all coming from the minds of men... I'm rather interested in the sequence and in some cases, actual individuals may be able to be identified as the origins of such myths... though I am aware that such identifications may also be myths!
Have you ever read any Freidrich Nietzsche? Btw, I like your name!
