Because most folks are confused, unenlightened, out of balance, scatterred and lacking in inner harmony, sorcerers and their ilk have devised several techniques for circumventing or by-passing or drilling down through our conscious minds to connect with power.   Ordinary reality in which our normal state of chattery monkey mind dwells can be side stepped by entering into an Altered State of Consciusness (ASC).  At the simplest level full emotional participation in ritual, as in Ceremonial Magick or for that matter High Mass, may shift consciousness into an ASC.  Antropologists have called this the state of Limnality, or being betwixt and between...neither here nor there.  Traditional shamans typically combine ritual of some sort with drumming and or drugs to enter into a shamanic state of consciusness (ASC) in which 'spirits' and visible.  Modern Chaos magicians call the state they enter to do their work 'gnosis.'

However you do it, and whatever you call it, entering into some form of ASC is almost the prerequiste for all serious sorcery of whatever ilk for it is in the ASC that we are able to slip the bonds of our own internal conflicts and uncertainties and do the work.  It is usually in an ASC that the sorcerer acts to in turn bring about changes in normal reality.  Dennis
