Well, my dictionary, the Oxford English Dictionary, gives me several definitions, some of them having nothing whatsoever to do with irrational or unjustified beliefs about a deity, or deities.

'Spirit' comes from the Latin word 'to breathe'. What we breathe is air, which is certainly matter, however thin. As a great scientist once said, 'Despite usage to the contrary, there is no necessary implication in the world spiritual that we are talking of anything other than matter, or anything outside of the realm of science'.
