For those who don't know George Carlin first popularized this although it has been around in one form or another for hundreds of years. "Thou shall keep thy religion to thyself."The fundgelicals amongst us get very upset and defensive whenever this simple common sense proposal is advanced. But I have NEVER heard a logical explanation of why. I've heard all the theories that start with the assumption that their version of this myth is the Truth ONLY Truth Complete Truth etc. etc, etc. But of course that only makes sense IF you first accept their version. If you don't, if you are a Muslim or a Catholic or a Hindu or (Grasp!) NONE of the above then that rationale simply does not apply so . . . What EXACTLY is wrong with the 11th and why is not fully compatible with the other 10?

Hey Cy, BTW, I love George Carlin! Funny dude! (especially in Dogma. I'm smilin' just thinking about "buddy Jesus! Thumbs up!) To answer, ole George was right, to a degree. A Christian should never "push" his beliefs on anyone, nor should he judge those who don't agree! We're s'posed to leave judgment to da judge! That's His department, not ours. However, we are called to share our "good news", but to do it in a loving, gentle manner, not like you see many doing today. Unfortunately, what screws up the whole program is that the unbelieving world gets to see Christians in action! And what they most often see does not reflect the joy and thankfulness of our salvation. What is most often reflected is that stern, puritanical, humorless attitude that is the result of following "dogma" as opposed to following Jesus. You know I am a believer and as I told you before, I did not just fall into that belief. I have studied and analyzed for years, and due to personal experience, I AM convinced there is a God. That's just me, though. I understand that's not you. Though it is usually accomplished in a misguided way, what drives most Christians (or should) is that we DO believe what God says about judgment and if true, we don't want to see others condemned. No doubt, many go about it in the wrong way. You've heard me say before, following the sheep is pretty stupid, we are supposed to follow the Shepherd. And even as the Son of God, you never saw him "push" His philosophy on anybody. He merely shared it with them and allowed them to choose. THAT is what we are supposed to do. Even if you think the sheep are stupid, (and I mostly agree) check out the Shepherd. He said He did not come to judge, but to save. That's the "good news". I can only hoe and pray others learn to share it in the same way. Blessings, Roger |

Why don't you follow it yourself, if it such a good idea?

I don't know much about George Carlin, aside from the fact that he was an allegedly funny comedian who I believe used foul language (as do other comedians). What exactly is wrong with the "eleventh commandment" is that it was either dreamed up by George Carlin or some other human, it was not one of the commandments given to those people, the Israelites, who received the ten commandments. Furthermore, it isn't compatible with the ten commandments as it would mean disobedience to GOD. It is one thing to request or demand that nobody tell you about their religion but if anyone were to actually take this commandment to its logical and complete conclusion then it might mean that people would not show kindness or love to one another (that is part of religion) and someone who actually wanted to know GOD might then be deprived of that opportunity because nobody would tell them about Him. Of course, GOD could bypass any such disobedience and directly speak with the one who wants to know Him but He prefers to involve us in His work.

And when was the last time some Hindu or catholic or even god hating atheists knocked on your door to told you were lost and going to burn forever? Or wanted to pass a LAW telling you who you could invite into bedroom or when to open your business?

In a sense, I am not sure that one can technically keep one's religion to oneself. I would expect it to influence behavior. I think there is a difference between my believing my religion is right for me, and insisting that it therefore be right for everyone, and that everyone should do it my way. Going further and insulting everyone by insisting that they are evil people and rejecting God and The Good when in reality they are rejecting my ideas of religion in an entirely different thing. I think that may be what Carlin was getting at.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard was not what I meant...

Actually, I think it is like the Second Commandment per the summary of the Law: Love your neighbor as yourself. If I hate hearing what is so GREAT about another's religion, then I won't bore people with what is GREAT about mine. I'll just quietly live my faith and if they ask, I'll give a simple answer. O'le George is a very wise man! A. |

You lead a sheltered life. In an event you would be covered by any law they have or plan to have enacted.
