Is it wrong for me to believe that there can be a Mother God, as well as a Father God?  I'm just tired of all this Male domination in the world.  Women should be able to worship a Goddess I think.  I am confused, because I don't think men to be greater then women.  And I'm tired of hearing "Well God is Male"  What do you believe?

Modern Goddess Worship:

A renaissance of Paganism, with its worship of Goddesses and Gods occurred in the middle of the 20th century with the re-emergence of Wicca (popularly called White Witchcraft, the benign religion of the ancient Celts) and other Neopagan traditions. Author Leonard Shlain believes that an "Iconic Revolution" has been made possible by the invention of imaged-based technologies, such as photography, movies, television, the Internet and graphic advertising. "Shlain foresees that increasing reliance on right brain pattern recognition instead of left brain linear sequence will move culture toward equilibrium between the two hemispheres, between masculine and feminine, between word and image." 1

Most Neopagan traditions worship the Goddess and God in balance. However, with the rise of feminism, new Neopagan traditions Wicca have been created in which the Goddess grew in importance, and the role of the God shrank into obscurity. One such tradition is Dianic Wicca.

The Goddess in both Goddess Worship and Neo-Paganism is often visualized in three aspects: Maiden, Mother and Crone. Her aspects are mirrored in the phases of the moon: waxing, full and waning.

The Maiden represents youth, emerging sexuality, the huntress running with her hounds. The Mother symbolizes feminine power, fertility, and nurturing. The Crone is wisdom, the compassion which comes from experience, and the one who guides us through the death experience.

I am Asatru, and we know our gods are both male and female.  There are male gods of might and wisdom, but too are their goddesses of power and learning, neither one greater or lesser, but rather complementary.  If everyone remembers Odin and his hall Valhalla where the greatest of the valiant dead await the end of days, we Asatru remember that Lady Freya receives half of the heroes to her own hall, and she gets the first pick.

There is divinity in man, unquestionably.  There is divinity in women, unquestionably.  There are mysteries that only men can share with the gods, for it is of our nature.  There are mysteries that only women can share with the goddesses, for it is of your nature.  While equal, these mysteries are as different as the two genders that spawned them, and not something that the other can ever understand.  That is as it should be.  We do not say the hawk is superior or inferior to the whale, but while each may share much of the worlds experiences, there are sights that each can only share with their own.  So too with men and women, so as well with the Gods and Goddesses.

Ladysky, I believe God is God....he simply chose to appear on this earth as a male.  He was perfect, but the only one of his kind.  Men are not superior but were given the task to lead our world and families. Most have failed.  Anyone who keeps telling  you "God is male" to show superiority skipped a few pages in The Book, ignore them.

God is male, female, and genderless.  The Goddess gets short shrift in (patriarchal) mainstream religions, but that doesn't mean She doesn't exist.  Perhaps we have an even greater need for Mother God since she hasn't been acknowledged so much.

I was once at a Presbyterian worship service, where the opening prayer printed in the bulletin said something about "God and Her love for us."  It resonated with me like the prayers to God as He did not.  Not because God is only female, but because the feminine side of God is usually missing in church.  And as a woman, I really feel that loss.

Believe what makes sense to you.  There are just too many religions with too many views to get bogged down in God/Goddess debate.
Do you care if your children call you Mother, Mom, mama?

Please yourself.. keep the relationship open between you and Spirit, Source, Creator, God, Goddess, etc. etc.

Smiles,
Donna

Or you could be like me and think of God as being only female. it is not strange to think of God as having a dual nature.

I worship Isis. I consider her to be the supreme ruling force. So basically, God is a woman. And why not? I think having a femal God is a lovely idea. And it is much more attractive to me considering i am a woman and i believe strongly in equal rights for the sexes.

and yes. i believe many people are becoming tired of male domination in this world. (because im only 16 and i still live at home) i go to (baptist) church and have to her all about male domination and influence. it makes me want to scream sometimes. it is time for women to take a stand against this testosterone filled world.

Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life; define yourself. ~Harvey Fierstein

God is beyond definition in terms of male, female.  We were split in creation to seek.  Integrate the feminine and the masculine parts of ourselves and find wholeness.  The patriarchal point of view is not working in our world, it is destroying our world.  A patriarchal world is too one sided to be a balanced world.

I don't know which spirituality or religion you practice, but if it helps, I was reading the Aramaic version of "The Lord's Prayer" And it seem that the word most likely  for Jesus to use would have had been "Our Parent", instead of "Our Father" -thus including both the female and male principle of the Divine. I have also read that the in the Jewish tradition, the Spirit of God ( I suppose the Holly Spirit) is considered to be female (The Shekina) and there is Sofia, apparently God's wisdom (or daughter, depending how you intrepret the Bible) who is also a girl ;-).
