If they did feel it was necessary to slaughter this giraffe - which I can understand is a decision that is hard to get behind.  By feeding it to the lions the saved or extended the lives of at least 2 or 3 antelope, pigs or goats.  Because that zoo has over 30 goats, pigs and antelopes slaughtered each year to feed it's large carnivores.

By using the girrafe that means at least a few animals were not required for slaughter.

rabello:  That's why there are always signs asking tourists not to taunt the animals.

Signs are one thing.  I worked across from gorillas.  Kept seeing people knocking on the plexiglass.  I showed them the small screws that attached the plexiglass to the display window and told them that the silverback could easily crash that window if he so chose (he had a rep for bending bamboo for trying to build bridges across the moat and I watched him jump over 5 feet onto a wooden platform effortlessly).  That put a chill down their spine.  :)

Knock and the door shall open.  It's not my fault if you don't like the decor.

What should captive lions be fed?

I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard was not what I meant...

I ask because I wonder if my gut feelings are hypocritical based on the fact that I eat meat.

As long as you don't eat lion meat, I think you're in the clear.

I think it'd be a refreshing change of pace to "kickin' it old school".  Feed criminals to the lions.  Bonus:  if they somehow survive the attack, they get pardoned.  Pass the A1 sauce...
