When I was onboard USS JONAS INGRAM in the Indian Ocean, temps exceeded 100 degrees daily.  With our deck-gray decks and overheads, our spaces were often uncomfortably hot despite our a/c's working at full capacity.  We were burning out expensive electronics as well as our air conditioning motors.  I know - I was the ship's Electrical Officer and I was responsible for those damned a/c systems.


We painted our decks and overheads white.


Results?  Our spaces were icy cold (especially our electronic spaces) and yet we were making only moderate use of our a/c systems.


It works...

Because white roofs get "dirty" and don't look good

My roof is the floor of the apartment upstairs from me.


Plus here in the NW excessive heat is about the last thing we need to worry about.

Has anybody noticed the color of flat roofed buildings in Greece?  All white, all the time.  Been like that for for a millennium or more.  Do you suppose it is because they don't like other colors?

Of course.  The ancients knew about this.  Also notice that in the Southwest, homes and buildings were whitewashed.

How much is white paint?  I've seen electric bills that are a couple of hundred or more because the a/c is constantly running.  Besides we're  talking only the ROOF and not the whole house...
