(CNN) -- President Barack Obama, who previously indicated his views were "evolving," said Wednesday that he supports same-sex marriage, raising the political stakes on an issue in which Americans are evenly split.
Now if we can just get him to admit his actual thoughts on legalizing marijuana! :)
His actual thought is that it's his ace in the hole.
If obama is elected in Nov, it surely means Arrmagedon is close by.
When you consider the homosexual community represents maybe 2% of the US population and the liberal left is around 20% (but that includes the first 2%), yeah I like obama coming out of the closet.
We can certainly agree this brings him no political advantage whatsoever. It was a simple case of doing the right thing.
Consider again that something on the order of 30 states have voted (most overwhelmingly), as did North Carolina, a state constitutional amendment against ssm, defining marraige as one man and one woman.
And consider that New Hampshire, a libertarian state with a very conservative legislature, has legalized it. Ken said it best a few posts ago.
The "defense of marriage" campaign is a cynical appeal to the hatred and insecurity of a large part of the Republican base.
obama is betting black Americans will vote based on race. He will lose some. His gain will be in donations from wealthy gay donors that he may or may not have gotten. I hope he has woefully under estimated this.
32 states have passed amendments or laws against ssm. Most by large majorities. You can look at all the national polling you want, but how many have balloted in favor?
I think this is going to do obama more harm by ginning up the conservative turnout. It will either bring total control (senate, possibly house) to obama, or total defeat, losing everything. We can only hope.
Any man can count the seeds in an apple.... .......but only God can count the apples in the seeds.
“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I talked to friends and family and neighbors, when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together; when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that ‘don't ask, don't tell’ is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I've just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.” In his behalf?
Yup. On his behalf. The interview was personal. The subject was Barack Obama's personal beliefs. It was not a Rose Garden speech.
Clearly Barack Obama is personally grateful for the sacrifices of US troops...straight and gay. For him the military are more than political props.

When I think of "the conservative turnout" I think of people like Ken, whom I heartily respect. Clearly this will not affect voters like this one way or the other.
Now the insecure, hateful base will certainly be stirred up.
By no definition was this a political move. It will confer no advantages at all.
Politicians don't do anything without calculating risk and reward. This politically charged move means that Obama's team has decided the race will be too close for comfort, and that the votes he will gain by this will outweigh those he will lose by alienating black evangelicals, who will not go vote for conservative Republicans no matter what, but simply stay home if they feel disgruntled by Obama.
When you are right, you are right. He certainly needs the enthusiasm gays can bring into the equation. Not too much of that going around this time.

Mr Obama gave a pretty good witness of his discipleship to Jesus. I know that it's a Wingomeme that "The President isn't a Christian." but that is an odd inquiry into a relationship between him and God.
Mr Obama, also, went to Dover AFB and rendered the customs and courtesy, and respect, to the remains of the fallen.
He's a class act.

"Wesley told the early Methodists to gain all they could and save all they could so that they could give all they could. It means that I consider my money to belong to God and I see myself as one of the hungry people who needs to get fed with God’s money. If I really have put all my trust in Jesus Christ as savior and Lord, then nothing I have is really my own anymore."

You HOPE? Welcome to the Obama Hope Train. I knew he would creep into your head eventually. So, now that you are socialist liberal, what are you going to do to help the poor?

Even older liberals and moderates don't know what to make of SSM. It is a complex and fairly new issue. But eventually I think younger voters will become a majority and favor what this nation was founded on: freedom and personal responsibility. In time voters will value the freedom and personal responsibility that we used to take seriously, but have failed to maintain. Conservatives have taken it upon themselves to be a moral compass that only limits freedom for a several classes of people. If conservatives really had virtue on their side they would have the courage to accept a diverse society, and promote freedom on a broad scale. Instead they want obedience to a narrow scope of freedom, dictated and enforced by the government. That's not very conservative.

Yes, let's promote HOPE some more. Good job TENAC for your support of the 2008 Obama message.
But let's hope for freedom, and less influence of bigotted people are afraid of any awareness that their morality isn't the end-all, be-all. Let's hope that republicans can accept their fellow citizens for who they are, and not some vilified threat to their personal morality. Let's hope that conservatives can focus on real progress, and stop being manipulated by fundamentalists who want some idealized nation of robots.
