Cairo clashes leave nine people dead
Unidentified assailants attack anti-military protesters
CAIRO (AP) — Clashes erupted on Wednesday between assailants and mostly Islamist protesters gathered outside the Defense Ministry in the Egyptian capital, leaving nine people dead and nearly 50 wounded, security officials said.
The violence is the latest episode in more than a year of turmoil in Egypt following the ouster of longtime authoritarian ruler Hosni Mubarak and will likely fuel more tensions just three weeks ahead of presidential elections
. . .
While a single incident of a foreign protestor in Israel receiving a possible broken nose is a lead on the world's news services, dead and wounded Egyptians gets scarcely a mention and even the dead and dying in Syria seem to have fallen off of the world's radar. Am I complaining? Maybe. But the bigger problem is what does this mean for the hope of Egyptian democratic reforms? Syrian democratic reforms? Democratic reforms the world over? It seems to me that there is ever too much "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" purposeful distraction with Israel being used as the distraction. This is bad for everyone.
