Augusta National Golf Club chairman Billy Payne was forced to deflect questions over the club's men-only members policy, on the eve of the 76th Masters. The issue arose again because one of the tournament's sponsors IBM has a new chief executive, Virginia Rometty. All four of her male predecessors were invited to be members. Payne said: "All issues of membership have been and are subject to private deliberations of the members." He added: "That statement remains accurate. That remains my statement." www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/golf/17622150 |

I agree with Tenac. They're a private club so they can have membership rules that exclude women if they want, but IBM should pull their sponsorship if they feel strongly enough about it.

My daughter-in-law was an IBM employee and always said that the company was gender blind when it came toi talent. IBM doesn't care what attributes the body that the brains come with has, which is probably why there's a woman at the helm of Big Blue now! Augusta may find itself short a sponsor if it persists in its mediaeval attitudes. What are those boys afraid of, anyway?
"God is no captious sophister, eager to trip us up whenever we say amiss, but a courteous tutor, ready to amend what, in our weakness or our ignorance, we say ill, and to make the most of what we say aright." from 'A Learned Discourse on Justification', a sermon by Richard Hooker (1554-1600).

Augusta is a private club, and as such can adopt whatever rules of membership it desires, including gender and racial discrimination. They do not even have to abide by the Americans With Disabilities Act, since their facility is not open to the general public. IBM, the PGA, Nike, Taylormade, Titleist, and anyone else is free to disassociate themselves from Augusta. Of course, if the wives of the men who are members took a united stand against their membership policy, it would change in a heartbeat. I doubt IBM will pull their sponsorship. The female president certainly realizes that the interests of the shareholders of her company must come first before her personal slight. She didn't rise to the top of a Fortune Five Hundred company by not knowing which battles to fight.

I am not a great golfer, but if I were I would totally lust after the opportunity to play at Augusta. Augusta is such a tradition.
That said, women can play for the PGA men's league, only they can't play at Augusta. A few women actually have done that and competed with the men. For the LPGA - the women's leage men are not allowed. Never have been allowed and there is no discussion of allowing men ever to play with the LPGA. I might be wrong but I was told not even a transgendered woman can play for the LPGA.
I would not like it if women were not allowed to have their women's only clubs and organizations. So I sort of think men should be allowed to keep theirs too. |

No, no, no. Women can play at Augusta and have. They just aren't invited for membership and as a side note, that's their privilege. |

Here's the irony of Augusta National. The course was originally co-designed by a guy named Bobby Jones. Jones was arguably the greatest golfer who never turned pro. A lawyer by profession, Jones thought professional golf was a hideous concept. He had such a reputation that he could not enjoy a quiet round of golf with his friends. As soon as word got out that Jones was on a course, he would find himself surrounded by fans, well wishers, gawkers, photographers, press, and hustlers. To alleviate this problem, Jones created Augusta National Golf Course. It was to be a refuge for him to play golf away from the prying eyes of the public. Jones hosted an annual tournament at Augusta, and it was a huge success early on, attracting the greatest names in golf immediately. Today, the Masters at Augusta National is the most sought after ticket in golf. Each year, tens of thousands of fans make the trek to see their favorite golfers compete for the coveted green jacket. Not bad for a guy who just wanted a little privacy.

It is not, and should not be the business of government regarding what a private club does, does not do, or who its members are. I am a free and Accepted Mason. We do NOT admit women! That is nobody's business but ours. My wife beliong's to a Women's club. They do NOT admit men. That is nobody's business but theirs. I play for a polo club...not as well as in the past unfortunately...LOL...we DO allow women to play against men! That is nobody's business but ours. Private means private...and government should keep out and so should politicians. The Roman Catholic church doesn't allow female priests...and that is nobody's business but Roman catholics... I could go on... Ken
