I agree, Templar. Repression of aliveness and individuality is not limited to religious fanatics; it is common to tyrants and tyrant-wannabes of all types.
>>>>>>>> It is seen among "Secular" people as well. Just look at communists during last century. They wanted to control everyone and their thought process. Very little tolerance was shown to people with different/new ideas.
Fanatics among religious people also shows intolerance by not accepting anything 'Different" than what they know as "Standards".
Whatever the "secular" people did they learned from the religous people.
And besides the "secular" people have an excuse. They do not believe in God nor in the myths of divine scriptures.
And you can be a communist and a muslim, jew or christian. So they would have two reasons to show intolerance. One for God and one for communism.
Of course if I was a communist I would simply borrow the popular well known defense that Muslims use.
They are Not-Real Communist.
They are So-Called Communist.
They have hijacked "True" Communism.
They are "mis-understanders " of Communism.
Only a "tiny minority" of Communist are intolerant.

What does the sign in the photo say? I loved the movie V for Vendetta...brilliant! Some demonstrators in Syria are wearing Guy Fawkes masks. GOOD FOR THEM!!! This takes great courage.
Umm... the picture is my signature, it is not meant to be part of the post I wrote...
It shows a French supporter of the 'Anonymous' hackers & the 'Occupy' movement, who takes part in one of the many New Year's swimming events. In Europe, it is quite common to go swimming on January 1st, 12 o'clock... www.spiegel.de/fotostrecke/fotostrecke-7...
The sign reads, 'To create is to resist, to resist is to create! Be indignant in 2012!'

The media presents models as very secure, strutting, savvy, desired, etc.
This is a misperception, I think.
The model species is known to be drug-dependent and anorexic, their inflated egos derive from public applause only and not from anything they'd inherently possess. They tend to require paid coaches and a managers because handling their fractious personalities requires phonebook-size manuals.
But then, maybe it depends on whatparticular media you choose to consume...
Of course, such a state of womanhood is very pityable. This is what these religious wingnuts, haredim or taliban or amish or what they may be called, correctly identify - and it's quite okay that they want to create a distance between themselves and such superficial glamour growing from intrinsic sickness.
This basic reaction is a good one. What's the problem is their religious delusion.

The specifics of the dress-codes demanded by this or that group of religious fanatics seem less relevant to me than the fact that they are uniformly anti-sexual and anti-individualistic. And considering that sexuality and diversity are intrinsic characteristics of human life, the fanatics' dress-codes are just illustrations of their all-pervasive hostility to human aliveness, both spiritual and physical.
I prayed for deliverance from the hard world of facts and logic to the happy land where fantasies and prejudices reign. But God spake unto me, saying, "No, keep telling the truth," and to that end afflicted me with severe Trenchant Mouth. So I'm sorry for making cutting remarks, but it's the will of God.
Templar: This is also why, I am convinced (as a guy): women do not pick the clothes they do to impress men (as would be the case if it were all about sex). They do so to impress other women.
Okay, I can only speak for myself being a woman. It is not so much about impressing other women, as it is simply about feeling on top, alpha female, good about yourself, secure, pretty/beautiful, intelligent (but this is only fake intelligence, bravado), desired, useful, independent, a lot of those kinds of things. The media presents models as very secure, strutting, savvy, desired, etc. If one doesn't have *those* clothes, *those* actions and attitudes, *that* presentation to the world, forget it. At the same time the media presents women as slightly off kilter, off balance (standing on one leg in high heel shoes and therefore vulnerable), eyes averted, unaware of their surroundings, zombie stare, sick looking (malnourished), weak, therefore prey. Or, laying down in a sexual position basically asking/begging for sex as if that's their prime purpose or directive in life. Another way women are presented is, as little girls with finger in mouth, shy, babyish, chest caved in (unassertive). The whole sex thing is so one-dimensional, presenting women as nothing but a few body parts to come and get. If I were a man, I would deplore that depiction of women. Men should want a whole woman for a complementary partner, or nothing at all. IMO.
Templar: I might add that this is not of course limited to religious fanatics. One can look at North Korea, where the intent is to stifle individual growth and "aliveness" in everyone, not just women (of course, the Communists were famous for this, promoting "equality" of women by suppressing both sexes equally). Probably a characteristic of authoritarian ideologies everywhere, which by their nature develop this extreme sense of paranoia.
Every country has its own way of suppressing. Now look what's happening in America. Education is too expensive and most people cannot simply go to a library and educate themselves. For one thing, they don't have time, or little time while trying to make enough money to survive. It looks like the prime (unspoken) directive by people who wish to own the populations of the world, is to make people dumb, therefore more controllable. Libraries are closing and dying, while information is being grabbed up by people who CAN own information. But this has been happening for a long time. Look what the Roman Catholic Church did to suppress information.
Dostojevsky: I think it was one of the Apostoles who said he was taken to the third heaven. Others attest to it and say that in the third heaven (celestial), Angels/inhabitants are naked. Anyone with a trace of carnality is tossed out like a disease. Perhaps in couple of thousand years we'll get there....
Information was circulating at the time that there were other planes of existence. The Gospel of Thomas: (11) Jesus said, "This heaven will pass away, and the one above it will pass away. The dead are not alive, and the living will not die. In the days when you consumed what is dead, you made it what is alive. When you come to dwell in the light, what will you do? On the day when you were one you became two. But when you become two, what will you do?" Also, Enoch had a lot to say about other planes or dimensions. Notice how these two books were suppressed for obvious reasons I won't go into.
You can believe that "angels" have wings as has been presented by artists...or are naked in art as Michelangelo originally painted. We are led to believe (are taught) there is no need for clothes, food, etc., or the streets are paved with gold, there is no pain, no lack, no disease, everything marvelous, beautiful and perfect, everything provided for. These are peoples' impressions of what's going on in other planes or dimensions. These thoughts are basically an escape from the pain of this world, the wish and hope for a better life to come. Oh and only the worthy or chosen can go there. Oops the door is closed to you unless you comply with certain expected behavior and the powers that be will tell you how you are to be, act, comply, what thoughts you must think, what rules you must follow. The truth of the matter is that the universe is wide open for whatever information you are brave enough to reach for, how unafraid you are to break the prescribed rules.
