Afraid to be upstaged by their Arab neighbours on the misogynist moral highground, Israeli groups call for gender segregation.

Hmmm, yet other Israelis criticise the extremists words.  Nor has the Israeli government enacted laws demanded by the extremists that would denigrate women's righhts.

Compare that to - say - Saudi Arabia, where the Ministry of Justice is RUN by the religious extremist clerics, and where anti-women and anti-gay laws are brutally enforced...

Big difference.  Big.  No moral equivalency here.  Sorry.

Extremism is on many different levels.

I accept the fact that Israel is far much superior on rights, however I do not get this Abrahamaic stance on gender segregation which creeps into politics.

Saudi Arabia is apparently the favorite country to use for comparison.  There are other neighbors out there who are not like the KSA.  They must be chopped liver.  There can be no honest comparison of any of them to Israel, since so little is really known about any of them by the majority on this board.

So Miraj,

Let's start with Israel's (well actually my) closest neighbor, Hamas. According to the Hamas Covenant a woman's role is to stay at home, run the house and produce many babies so that the male babies can grow up to be warriors in the Hamas cause. She is supposed to receive just enough education so that she can run a household economically and can pas on the Hamas message of religion and hatred with her mother's milk.

So women will remain barefoot, pregnant and not highly educated. How does that sound to you?

As Mlyons said, there is NO moral equivalency here. In Israel the misogynist is the EXCEPTION and there is a public outcry when it occurs.  In KSA it is legislated NORMALCY and there is an outcry when someone dares to confront it.  Seriously, what gives?

Israel has several neighbors, not just the KSA.  If you're going to talk about what its "neighbors" do, get to know something about them first instead of lumping all Arabs into the KSA and Hamas or stereotyping Arab socieities.  It's a fair suggestion, especially if you're tired of Israel being unfairly stereotyped.

strange...i don't see in the post wiht the comparison any lumping or reference to all the neighbors, just a reference to the KSA. Why get defensive and say not to use the KSA but use some other country? That wasn't the point fo the post. Did someone moderate the word "arab" out of the comparison? Why would someone responding to a claim of misogyny in Israel compare this to a country in which such misogyny is absent?

Hamas was given, as well as KSA.  Syria is gunning down its dissidents without regard to sex (an equal opportunity hater).  Egypt is beating and publicly stripping women who dare protest for their rights.

So where's that neighbor of Israel who CHAMPIONS womens rights?  The World is waiting...
