Our New Zealand oil spill disaster has been described as a black swan:

www.greenpeace.org/usa/en/news-and-blogs...

What is a 'black swan'?  It's low probability but high impact event.  And that is what this Rena spill is: a black swan.

www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/10/13/ap/as...

We've got hundreds of tonnes of petrol leaking into the Pacific, soiling the beaches, killing marine life, ruining the whole environment.  It'll never be anywhere near totally cleaned up.  The impact upon the ecosystem is incalcuable.

And all this simply because oil companies want to keep pumping the stuff out of the ground and make more billions.

It's all so disgusting.

Needless to say, I'm disturbed and disgusted, truly sorry for your problems with this down there.

No matter what you think about oil, this is a tragedy; and laws which limit punishment to 12 months in jail for the captain and probably will be unable to touch the big bosses in the shipowning company, are insufficient.

As for the oil companies, they will no doubt, with some prodding from the courts, fork over a bunch of money to defray the cleanup costs, and then go on with business as usual.

The "deregulate industry" people probably consider stuff like this simply a cost of doing business.

No one is going to care much because we all depend so much on oil for the running of our daily lives.

1. Extremists think that thinking means agreeing with them.
2. There are three sides to every story: your side, my side, and the truth.
3. God is just a personification of reality, of pure objectivity.

Templar and Marcoe -

Agreed.  (I'm too depressed about this whole situation to write more.)

Here a black swan is a large, majestic bird. They can be found swimming, flying, and raising young.
