Since there has been a lot of talk by religious fundamentalists claiming that God has caused the natural disasters and even the man-made atrocities, and since some progressives and liberals have understandably made mocking statements that God caused Hurricane Irene in order to wake up the Republicans in Washington D.C., it calls for a rationale, reasonable discussion about the real nature and will of God.

Of course, no one knows fully what that is, because God is indefinable and unfathomable. However, I'd like to recommend an article that offers a fairly reasonable explanation that is compatible with science, and I think it can advance our understanding.
