Has the falling space junk hit anyone yet?
I want to know when I can stop worrying about that and start worrying about something else i can't do anything about......
No need to worry.
If it hits ya - no more worries.
Therefore no need to fret over such things.
Irene.
Irene--Hi. And that's exactly how I feel about EMPs. ;)

What would happen is that this country would be knocked back to the 19th Century at worst. It would be catastrophic for the 3rd world who depend on our grain to survive. BTW who has such a device?
Hi, All! Hi, Roo! It would be catastrophic for us, too. Most of us who dwell in the cities don't know of any other way to find food except to buy it in stores. I've actually had people scream at me in terror, "Don't eat it! It might be poison!" when they saw me pick (edible) wild berries. As for who has such a device -- please read earlier posts in the thread. Pakistan has nukes; so does North Korea. Iran doesn't have nukes yet, but that hasn't stopped them from practicing detonating missiles at the peak of their trajectory (which is where you would detonate a nuke to create a massive EMP). Iran has also established friendly diplomatic relations with North Korea, and it is believed that they are negotiating with them for nuclear armaments. And, as you yourself pointed out, there are already a few missing nukes out there... Who has them? Who knows? ... But whoever has them, it isn't wise to assume that a catastrophic EMP event will never happen to us. It's far smarter to make some contingency plans than to be taken completely by surprise. Love, -- Claudia
Are you talking about EMP as an after affect of a nuclear attack or as a weapon in its own right? You know if such an attack was perpetrated against the US, the Eastern Hemisphere would be blown off the map in retaliation.
So who the hell would risk it?
...do you really believe in this political landscape that the MAD Doctrine is still effective? I have my doubts.
It won't be doctrine if the Eastern Hemisphere is obliterated.
For those who have faith, no explanation is neccessary. For those who have no faith, no explanation is possible.

If one turns his ear from hearing the Law, even his prayer is an abomination. Proverbs 28:9

No problems here other than my effingham computer having a virus AGAIN. Second time in barely a year. What leads you to think the keybox was damaged by solar flares? Couldn't it simply have failed for another reason? I've a cousin who's a realtor who swears those things operate by Murphy's Law.
Hi, All! I can't say that it did fail due to solar flare activity. I don't know why it failed, or why our computers failed, or why a temperature-sensor chip in my car needs replacing AGAIN -- second time in a month now. There is no smoking gun to indicate that any or all of these electronic troubles are in any way due to increased solar flare activity. But -- speaking as an engineer, it seems suspicious to me when normally-reliable electronics all fail within a few weeks of each other. When that happens, I start to wonder whether there is a cause linked to all of the failures. Since the keybox, the car electronics, and -- oh, yeah, I forgot, we had to return a nearly-new microwave oven in mid-August, too! -- were not vulnerable to computer viruses, I have to consider that there might have been environmental factors at work. Thank you all for your input to the thread! Love, -- Claudia

Did everyone stay up all night worrying about getting hit/smashed by that falling piece of space junk that's going to hit somewhere/someone today?

Hi, All! I don't know if any of you are keeping track, but we had some intense solar flares in early August, around the 4th. I have a house for sale, and that week the "key box" (the electronic box that realtors use to keep the key for when they need to show the house) stopped working. It's still stuck to the porch, and they may need to use a hacksaw to get it off because it isn't responding to any signals at all. In late July my laptop stopped working; now my husband's laptop is behaving badly, too. And I'm getting a little annoyed because while this is all only "anecdotal" evidence that electronics are vulnerable to solar-flare EMP (and a myriad other faults), it's expensive anecdotal evidence. We now have to replace two laptops that both worked just fine before late July -- and we've only started the stormy part of our sun's cycle, which isn't due to peak until 2013. So, if we buy another laptop now, are we going to have to replace it again within six months? I'm beginning to wonder if that might be very likely. Bleah. Maybe I'll "harden" my laptop case with foil, and never leave my machines plugged in when I'm not using them. (Except, both failed when they were plugged in and I was using them. I'm not sure I can see any good way around that, can you?) Has anybody else had trouble with their electronics over the past two months? Love, -- Claudia
