Oceans in Distress Foreshadow Our Extinction

New evidence shows that Atlantic cod off Nova Scotia are recovering from their dramatic collapse two decades ago — and that the ecosystem is recovering with them. That suggests major changes to marine ecosystems can be reversed with time, says a Canadian study published Wednesday in the scientific journal Nature. It also "bodes well" for other cod populations further north along the East Coast that have yet to recover, says the study, led by researcher Kenneth Frank at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth, N.S.

Howdy

There have been, are and will be religious prophets of doom and science prophets of doom.  So far they have all been wrong with regards to human beings.

Not only did each period see species die out, but also each period of social change saw its doomsday prophets, connecting their petty misery of the moment to planetary end times.

A good meteor strike or a supervolcanic eruption will cull out the human race down to managable levels. Even those events would not wipe out humanity if adequate precautions are carried out. Each Government would shelter a few million from such calamity.

The only problem with such a mass extinction event is that human beings will not be the only species to be......culled down to managable levels.

There have been five such events since Allah-Jesus-????? created the planet.  Appox 99% of species recorded are now extinct.

You note the five major ones. In the passing of each period within the Geological eras, they  are marked with extinctions. From the Cambrian to the Holocene, each period saw species die out.

For those who have no faith, no explanation is possible.

Well, not yet ...

But, yes, "Mortality" IS a Fact of ALL "Life" ...

Only "God" is Eternal ... WE are NOT ...

Yes and No ...

Our Natural Desire to Capture The Moment, i.e., find SOME Way to keep The Climate and Earth's Ecosystems in (as WE imagine them) "Normal" Mode ... is ironically part-parcel of the PROBLEM ...

Indeed, Human Industrial-Agricultual-Cultural Activities are "forcing the Rate" of Global Climate Change AND of EcoSystem Changes ... But that we are thus producing a Rate and Scope of Changes that are unprecedented in Earth History ... is probably NOT the Case ...

But, yes ... In my Opinion, we have now PASSED The "Tipping" Point ... Even AFTER the coming Human Population Crash, it will NEVER be "1953" again ...

Well, Teilhard, that is true, up to a point- but so far as I can see, two things are different about what is going on now.

First, the rate at which climate is changing.  Slower change gives (at least some) species a chance to adapt to changing ecosystems.

Second, what is happening now is not just one thing, but a multi-dimensional assault.  There is global warming; there is the destruction of the rain forests; there is habitat loss for countless species; as detailed in the OP there are serious problems with the oceans for various reasons, not limited to climate change (pollution and over-fishing come to mind).

And the tragic thing is we could prevent all of this, given enough will and foresight.
