I have only read a little of the posting on this thread. But the diversity of opinion suggests that this topic is little understood.

The Religious Right  and the collective ethos in it will not admit of rational approaches to address human problems.  They think that everything exists by a divine fiat and the outcome of any situation is pre-ordained.  Therefore to postulate that the human race can and should assess situations and find solutions is anathema to a demographic blinkered by theistic determinism.  Why bother debating issues with such people?  It would be better to ignore them and use our time and energy contributing  to ways to alleviate if not remedy the stresses that the human race inflicts on the world.
