Prior to developing the atom bomb, science was ethically neutral and the province of universities and research institutions. Shortly after initiating the first chain reaction at Soldiers field, Leo Szilard turned to Fermi and said, This is a black day for science. Szilard had the foresight to see that science had just sold its soul to the military industrial complex and would now become a pawn of politicians as the German scientists had under Hitler. |
