Scam and Phishing Emails

Martha has recently addressed  this email scam in her blog.  The scam is a well-known Nigerian scam  that tends to target faith-related websites like Beliefnet on the  assumption that our users are particularly gullible.

She encourages all members to check out her information and follow  her advice  here.

Just for now please do not email the Community Mailbox (community@beliefnetstaff.com)  with  complaints/reports.  Instead members should use the "Report  Content" button on the spam/phishing email we receive.  Thanks.

Greetings, Beliefnet folk,

Just a gentle reminder that Beliefnet welcomes all beliefs, even  controversial ones, and is committed to free expression within the  modest limits of the Rules of Conduct. We have never censored anyone  because of their beliefs. However we do take action when a member's  behavior violates the Rules of Conduct, especially when that behavior  inhibits other members so that they do not feel free to express  themselves.

We do our best to educate and warn members who run afoul of the  Rules, and give everyone a chance to amend their behavior. We only take  drastic action when members demonstrate that they have no intention of  abiding by the Rules.

Please do not make negative remarks about other members.

Please do not post complaints in public. One reason is that it is  ineffective. If you have complaints, we want to hear them, because we  strive continually to improve our site and community. If you actually  want someone to take action on your complaint, messsage Beliefnet_community profile page. Furthermore, complaints posted on the forums are off-putting for other members, and are always off-topic.

Members who do not observe these Rules (or any of the others) may  have posts removed. If they continue to violate the Rules, they will be  warned. If they continue to violate the Rules even after being warned,  we will have no choice but to remove them from the site, to preserve the  health of your discussions and your community.

I will reiterate that we have never suspended anyone for expressing  their beliefs, as long as they did so within the limits of the Rules of  Conduct.

Thank you for taking the time to read this reminder.

Footnote:  please write to Beliefnet_community instead of the email above.

•  Please do not send anything to the Community Mailbox (community@beliefnetstaff.com).

Instead, please send complaints, glitch reports, and questions to the Beliefnet_community profile page.  That profile now serves as a reporting center.  Reports and complaints can be directed there by going to that profile page, clicking on "Send Message," and messaging the profile.  Alternatively, if you are Friends with Beliefnet_Community (and almost everybody is :-) you can just shoot an email to that profile through the Beliefnet email system.

That mailbox is checked regularly.  Reports and complaints are addressed and responded to.

Please continue to report a post by hitting the "Report" button on the post in question.

Follow the prompts and submit your report explaining why you think the post violates the ROCs.  Those reports are checked regularly, and addressed and responded to.

 •   Please do not send reports of spam or phishing email to the Community Mailbox.

Instead, please use the "Report" button on the email you receive, follow the prompts, and submit your report.

Beliefnet has a contractor whose job is to handle those reports, and to delete spam/scam/phishing email and the accounts of the senders.  She works with vigilance and speed

 Many thanks,
