The detailed reasons for how to maintain a bike chain seem excruciatingly technical! The rotating parts are basically the pins, bushings and rollers. The stuff to keep out of those cylindrical assemblies is dirt. All the experts agree on first cleaning the chain. There are two procedure options: on or off the bike. The purists recommend taking the chain off and agitating it in a container of solvent. Slackers prefer to do everything with the chain still on the bike. Then the chain should be dried. Purists would use an oven! others prefer cloth or paper towel. Then oil for wet weather or dry-lube for dry conditions. The experts recommend against generic stuff like paraffin wax or household lubricants. Everything I have read points to fancy, expensive bike-shop special lubes being the go!
