I have a question.  I attend a non-denominational, bible centered church.  They play a combination of old gospel and new contemporary christian music.  I love music and when a great song is being sung, I cannot stand still.  I sway back and forth while singing.  It has caught on with several of the younger kids around me and they have begun to sway too.  (No one jumps, swings around, or otherwise gets out of hand.)

I was recently told that this bothers some in the church and although they would not "forbid" me from doing so, would I stop.

I felt a bit like David being scolded by bathsheba when he danced before the arc.  God moves all to worship him.  My worship has always been through music.

I would like advise from others.  My first response was to say I would just make sure I stayed in the back row so I would not disrupt anyone else.  But after taking time to think, I am considering changing churches.

Hi Jamie, I'm an atheist so take anything I say with a heavy grain of skepticism....

I too love music and when I listen to particularly great music I tend to move to it as well.. Whether it's a tap of my foot or bebopping head movement while listening via ipod, moving upper body when seated, or standing up to do the wave thing at a more public outdoor concert. When driving down the freeway to especially great road trip music, I  play drum on the steering wheel and sing along too... People driving next to me may think me rather odd... LOL! Smile

Because some folk may find this rather distracting, I avoid listening to music at work related events. Not so sure work etiquette applies to church or other fellowship etiquette, however.... there's more to this than manners.

I'm surprised swaying to music in church should be such considered a bad thing, I mean I would think the church pianist would be rather flattered that people are moved by her music.... obviously the denomination you belong to isn't one of those odd pups who think music and dance are evil. If you like to move to music and others find it disconcerting, who should blink first? If a few people are mildly disturbed, perhaps a little tolerance on their part is warranted.

Interesting the way they put it to you... I'm always a little wary of "mandatory volunteerism" if you know what I mean and honestly, if the only gripe is a little swaying in church it all seems rather..... petty.

I suppose it comes down to how comfortable you are in this church, if it weren't for this one situation. Do you enjoy interaction with other members, do you feel you are learning and growing by attending this particular church, do you feel valued, do you feel you are demonstrating respect and worship for your god by attending this church, best of all how is the FOOD and fellowship otherwise? Smile

Good luck and kind regards,

Thank you.  That is an extremely insightful look at the situation.  I will give what you said some real thought.

You're welcome. May not hurt to hear what Christians have to say about this as well since their experiences are likely to be more similar. There are Christian only forums in the Community section --- Or

There's a multi-faith forum....

or the somewhat contentious Discuss Christianity forum as well. The latter is a forum to debate Christianity, with Christians and non-Christians debating about the merits (or lack) of Christianity. It can be rather contentious,  but it's fairly busy board which would provide the benefit of a larger pool of people to draw upon.

IN a general sense I don't like people that try to keep someone from enjoying music.  Moving to the music is a very common way to enjoy yourself.

If they would have asked you to sit in the back so you and the others that enjoy the swaying can do so without impeding anyone's view that might have been kinder.

But to ask you to stop all together is not considerate of you as a person, especialy since you are not the only person.

Probably these are some of the older members of the church who like to control things and feel put out when things get out of their control.  As people get older, retire from work, have empty nests they often focus their attentions on church.  They need something they can control and exert influence over - often it is the church. we don't usually become less petty as we get older.

The fact is you need to move and grove - you need it!  If you can't do that at this church then this church is not for you.  However, God puts you in situations sometimes for a reason.  I would pray about it, ask God for guidance - perhaps talk to the pastor or one of the elders to let them know your thoughts.  Give this church another chance.  There is a good possiblility that a happy arrangement can be made.   If you try all avenues and still get nowhere then you will probably have to move on

Think of all the kids who are enjoying church so much more because of you.  If you leave there will be no dancing and I see a church that evenutally dies out.

I think you have a right to be offended but you also have a responsiblity to this church to see if you can create some positive changes not just for yourself but also for other members and future members.

Thank you.. great food for thought.  I have been praying about it.  I don't feel like I have been given a direction yet.  But, God has put before me another task that is preventing me from attending church at this time, so, perhaps he will be sending some direction soon.
