It is way too late to close the boarders it is here now, Swine Flu in San Diego, Kansas, Texas, Maybe NY < So are you ready to stop travel between the states?

"California Department of Public Health confirms a seventh case of swine flu in the state -- and it's the third in Imperial County. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta says besides the two confirmed cases in Kansas, there are nine in California and Texas.

They noted there had been no direct contact between the cases in the San Diego and San Antonio areas, suggesting the virus had already spread from one geographic area through other undiagnosed people."

> "Three more cases of swine flu have been diagnosed in San Diego and Imperial counties, bringing the total to five for the area and health experts say it looks like the virus is spreading from person to person.

Swine flu is a respiratory illness that normally affects pigs, and only rarely spreads to humans, but in these recent cases the CDC says the patients had no direct contact with pigs." <

The WHO fears a mutation.  The sick BA aircrew might suggest that happened.  But then again, that person might've kissed a pig.

But as to a statement that the mutation HAS occured, I have no AUTHORITATVE evidence.  If you have one, please link.

"If it mutated.  Which it possibly has done..."

It was on the news last night

Btw--I think people don't understand the names for the various forms of flu strains--Just because it has an animal NAME--like "Avian Flu" does NOT mean it can't spread from human to human.

AVIAN FLU jumped from birds to humans in 1918 and caused a worldwide FLU EPIDEMIC--at least 20 million people died--from its being passed from human to human.

The animal name in the title--like "swine" or "avian"--indicates the probable original source of the virus.

No authoritative article has thusfar stated that swine flu HAS mutated and is being passed human-to-human.  When that happens then we WILL have a pandemic.

From the Q&A article

Q. How high is the risk of a pandemic?

A. Since the swine flu outbreaks in Mexico and U.S. Were identified, the risk of a pandemic has increased. Health officials worry the swine flu might develop into a form easily spread among humans. To do this, it could combine with a human flu virus or mutate on its own into a transmissible form. Experts worry that the more the virus circulates, the more likely a pandemic strain will emerge. But there is no way to predict when a pandemic strain will develop.

Q. Does a vaccine exist?

A. Pigs in North America are routinely vaccinated for swine flu, but no vaccine exists for humans. In any case, the flu virus evolves quickly, meaning that vaccines are soon obsolete. Health officials say there is no suggestion that the vaccine prepared for seasonal flu will protect against swine flu.

While people who are given the seasonal flu vaccine will probably be not protected against swine flu, it may prevent them from getting the seasonal flu. If they are then infected with swine flu, that reduces the possibility of the two flus mixing in that person to create a potential pandemic strain.

Q. What other treatment is there?

A. The swine flu virus detected in Mexico and the United States appears to respond to treatment with oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza). In terms of prevention, maintaining good hygiene, for example regular hand-washing and staying a safe distance from those infected, may help.

So don't forget to wash your hands -- and use HOT water and a good soap, please...

I think there may have been some confusion on my earlier post. I was not advocating the use of drugs for swine flu. Actually they had said on the news that many of the antiviral drugs are usless against this particular strain. That is the reason they are concerned about it becoming a pandemic. I just wanted to clairify that. I still believe in frequent hand washing, and sick people staying home instead of going out passing it around in public.

This is a flu strain that began in pigs, but mutated and became a human to human bug. This is what they fear will ultimately happen with bird flu. So far, we have dodged the bird flu bullet.

Swine flu appears to be passed onto humans by direct contact with pigs.  There is thusfar no evidence of human-to-human contagion.

So unless pigs fly coach on Aeromexico, I wouldn't worry just yet...

We need to do something that few people do anymore. Years ago, when people were sick, they stayed home. Too many people send kids out to school sick, go off to work sick, grocery shop and go to other stores sick. Germs are often passed through the hands touching surfaces, passing germs on door knobs, grocery cart handles, telephones, computer keyboards, light switches...the list goes on and on. Wash hands often and keep them away from your face, and hope it isn't airborne!!

Germs are in every square inch of the planet.  Some people get sick and some don't.

What is the difference?  Healthy people  have better defences.

That is where the emphasis should  be.   It is the body defenses that have to be strengthened  by healthy living, rather than  killing  the problems with drugs.
