Tonight my socialist party political report mentioned the elections in Germany, France and Greece. Yet in this forum, I haven't read of them!

wow they don't even have one of these over @ us news and politics and it's a little bit more hopping board that this ghost town too bad!!
Hello Amycain - as can be expected in a ghost town, I am too late to welcome you... I am happy you found your way here! Would you like to discuss any international experience, issue, whatever?
But in all fairness, I should point out: they have the "Ad Hominem Saloon" next door, which is much more of a cozy place than you would think it is... give it a try!

It's hard to chat with someone who's so private. This afternoon I swam ½ km at an outdoor pool, to escape the 34 ℃.

Used to be that DMZ cafes like this one were the centers of the community. The DMZ Bar & Grill on the old US Politics board could easily have over a 1,000 posts within two or three months. What happened to change that? This place hasn't had any business in eight months. Why? It's a nice cafe. The coffee's good and the chairs are comfy. Is it because people are too busy trying to make the other guy look like an *$$#*%@ to sit down for a friendly chat?
Too bad. It IS a nice cafe...

I had the trike out in unusual rain yesterday. The 15 km round trip took me to a car accessories dealer. There I got jumper leads and a charger for my Prius' 12V auxiliary battery.

What a beauty! Thanks for sharing, Mark! I don't know what exactly it is that makes people detect the foreigner in a person. I make this experience on a regular basis still, although I've been liveing as a German in the Netherlands for more than a decade now. And waiters of course are experts in detecting the slightest signals - it's part of their job... My uncle and a youth friend of his used to participate in the Kieler Woche as well, back in the 1970s / early 1980s... before their wives reformed them to tennis... [a change for the worse, in my eyes...] ...and, well: to German ears, the 'Lieutenant of the US Navy' may sound less specific than the 'Korvettenkapitän' - but certainly also less German-bureaucratic...

...Have a cappucino...!
Thanks. That BTW is a VERY recently acquired taste. Can't understand why I didn't like 'em before. Expresso, OTOH, while I'd not refuse, would certainly not be my first pick from the coffee bar. A tad strong for my taste. When I ordered a coffee in Kiel, I got an expresso. I had always taken my coffee black with no cream or sugar, and I think the waiter was amused when I took my first sip. I did manage to finish it, tho. BTW I went to a clothier before going to the restaurant, and had bought ALL German clothes -- not to mention belt and shoes. Went to some pains NOT to look American. Even asked the clerk what looked good and what he'd recommend. Had planned on ordering my dinner in German. I didn't open my when the hostess greeted me in ENGLISH and the waiter - after handing me my menu in ENGLISH - asked me in ENGLISH what part of the U.S. I came from. How the H*** did they know? Forgot what I ate (I think it was a stroganoff dish, but I certainly remember the Rhinewein (I credit my visit to Europe for my tastes in wine) that was served along with my expresso. After my visit to Germany, I forever swore off American horse-peepee, er, beer That was BTW during the Kieler Woche for June 20-28, 1981. I was a member of the USS JONAS INGRAM at the time. I also much preferred the German translation of my rank to the English -- Korvettenkapitän in the Deutche Bundesrepublik Kriegsmarine sounds a hellua lot more boss than Lieutenant, United States Navy...

A new life! A new hope for mankind! There's no better reason to clean up, replace the old drapes, and make some good Italian coffee for all us oldie planet earthers. No excuse to stay sleepy today! Congratulations, Mark! Have a cappucino!
