They happen to have three kids who are required by law to be placed in car seats, and in no certain way, (unless the laws of phyics are broken) could they ever fit in the back seat (which is the safest place) of even a mid-sized sedan. Oh, but let's do have some fun saying things about SUV owners calling them names.
The No. 1 feeling is that everything surrounding you should be round and soft, and should give," Rapaille told me. "There should be air bags everywhere. Then there's this notion that you need to be up high. That's a contradiction, because the people who buy these S.U.V.s know at the cortex level that if you are high there is more chance of a rollover. But at the reptilian level they think that if I am bigger and taller I'm safer. You feel secure because you are higher and dominate and look down. That you can look down is psychologically a very powerful notion. And what was the key element of safety when you were a child? It was that your mother fed you, and there was warm liquid. That's why cupholders are absolutely crucial for safety. If there is a car that has no cupholder, it is not safe.
~Gladwell~

Karma,
This guy obviously has no children and knows nothing about what is involved in getting them around. Safety isn't the ultimate issue (although my insurance rates went down when I purchased my SUV), the room to haul children, their, required by law, safety seats, diaper bags, etc. is. My advice is before posting another quote from someone who doesn't have a clue, do a little more research. |
Car guys know that people don't buy cars, they buy image. Detroit's car guys ingeniously pushed a lot of emotional buttons when they marketed Hummers and other slick SUVs, which convey an aura of dominance and allow their owners to show the world who's the toughest and coolest of them all.
~Daily Green~

Oh, that's the reason. Image is everything. So can the daily green explain why used car lots are filling up with SUVs and you can't find a compact car to save your life? Perhaps image has less to do with things, and the practical nature of cost and utility has more to do with it.

Karma my friend, how about using your own words instead of posting quotes written by others that support your point of view ?
For the very knowledgeable people writing these articles, (big sarcasm alert) think about this instead of projecting your own feelings of unsupported superiority on everyone else.... My sister in law has 3 kids. 2 of them need car seats. She hauls around a lot of large objects for their business, so yes for her, and SUV is a necessity and yes, the cost in fuel is really having an impact on their lives. For the self-righteous who denigrate everyone who chooses to drive an SUV, why not direct your spite towards the people driving a HUMVEE who'll never go off road? Or those who are still driving 30 year old cars that spew blue smoke out their exhaust? Or, better yet, the off road vehicles used to veer around and tear up virgin lands? Oh wait, sorry the off road vehicles are more fuel efficient than SUV's, never mind the damage they cause.... Kind regards all, agnosticspirit
Tribalism, ethnocentricism, racism, nationalism, and FEAR is the Mind Killer... >:(

My Prius has adequate storage. Indeed under a false floor is an extra luggage compartment.
![]() I am noticing more Prius cars every day. Yesterday I saw a black one in a supermarket car park. For hauling me and a friend, it's fine. Though it did slow down going up into a mountain range carrying two other men as passengers! ![]() |

Karma,
Now, do an experiment. Take your Prius and go buy a booster seat for a 3 year old, a car seat for a 2 year old, and an infant carrier. Try to put them in the back seat abreast of one another. Send me a picture of that. |
