COURT REVERSES A BAN ON 'HUMANIST' SCHOOLBOOKS

A Federal appeals court today reversed a trial judge's order that had banned 44 textbooks from the Alabama public schools on the ground that they promoted a godless, humanistic religion.
In allowing the textboooks to remain in use, the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit said the books appropriately sought to instill such values as tolerance and self-respect. Disagreeing with the district judge who had banned the books, the appeals court held that they did not promote a religion of ''secular humanism'' or an antagonism toward God-centered religions. #2d Ruling on 'Godless' Books The ruling was the second time in three days that a Federal appeals court ruled against fundamentalist Christians who had challenged public school textbooks.

A Win For The Good Guys!

John Buchanan, chairman of the liberal lobbying group People for the American Way, called today's decision ''a major victory for public education, for freedom of education, and for freedom to learn.''
Mr. Buchanan, a Baptist minister and former eight-term Republican Representative from Alabama, said his organization would release a 50-state censorship survey today that will show that fundamentalists are ''having more and more success in banning books.''

Wow a Baptist minister standing up for freedom of education! That was back in 1987... wonder if he would do the same today?

I tried to start this thread yesterday, when the Bnet database was acting up. It is news from 1987, but the fundamentalists are at it again with new vigor. We can learn from history.

Thanks for posting this, dblad! It's encouraging news in a sea of the darkness Fundamentalists would take us back to if they were allowed to have things go their own way!
Tribalism, ethnocentricism, racism, nationalism, and FEAR is the Mind Killer... >:(
