One less thing to agonize over: news.yahoo.com/debris-doomsday-comet-ele...
It isn't about waiting for the storms to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain.

The link didn't work for me, John, but googling gave me some info.

I hadn't even heard about this, and now its over. :(

It seems strange that Camping  didn't use this to booster his 'prophecy'.

Its a good thing he didn't though.   There would have been more people believing him if he had, and more people emotionally and financially  suffering because of it.

Yes it is strange that Camping didn't try to figure in some biblical context to it, and use it as a basis of fact against reason and logic. Madman either for that matter. This item here was what caught my interest though:

The doomsday comet

Elenin's apparent demise may come as a relief to some folks, since apocalyptic rumors circulating on the Internet portrayed the comet as a major threat to Earth.

(actually it got less press coverage than Camping)

One theory claimed Elenin would set off havoc on Earth after aligning  with other heavenly bodies, spurring massive earthquakes and tsunamis.  Another held that Elenin was not a comet at all, but in fact a rogue planet called Nibiru that would bring about the end times on Earth. After all, the comet's  name could be taken as a spooky acronym: "Extinction-Level Event: Nibiru  Is Nigh."

I've had a wicked thought. ;)

I wish somebody with the fervour of Madhorseman had brought this here to this board, we could have had some fascinating discussions.

"Extinction-Level Event: Nibiru Is Nigh."

Oh what fun we could have had with that  :D

ANNIE!!!!! (ROTFLMAO!!!)

P.S. I just wonder if that wasn't supposed to be the "Big Event" Camping and Madman was referring to with the scorched earth policy that got changed to a silent death? Do you think they could have gotten wind of this article before we did?

Honestly John, I doubt Camping is that smart. However I am willing to think the demise he senses may well be his own. He is ill. I do not wish any harm, but how long to this world can he be?

A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side. Aristotle

You may be right, mainecaptain!

Perhaps the only comfort Camping can derive from his own impending demise is the thought that the whole world is going to accompany him. There is a psychological term for this that presently escapes me.

By the way, mainecaptain, almost had to get a magnifying glass out to read your post. :)

I tend to agree, maine.

I also think Camping wanted to focus on his prophetic ability and being able to understand cryptic biblical messages, that there would be no room for any thing else.

It wouldn't surprise me if old Harold wished the whole thing would just go away, so he could spend his last years in peace.

I don't know about Madhorseman though.  I hope he can make reparation with his family, and get on with his life in a productive way.

While we can make jokes about them, and the whole shemozzle, we have to remember they are people, just like us.  Even if their ideas are wacky, to say the least, we don't know how much torment was going on in their heads caused by their own beliefs.

I guess we are going to continue to have people latching onto anything that can be turned into a doomsday event for a very long time to come.  December 2012 is just around the corner.  Its going to be interesting to see the 'believers' actions as it gets nearer.

Sorry about that, I messed up the formatting somehow

That's what happens when you look for something cryptic in literal words. Children see the bogeyman under their beds at night, or even lurking in their closet. However they learn that it's only shadows and nothing out to get them.

I don't think Harold will chabge his tune anymore than the Madman. And others will surely follow in thier footsteps after them. There is always going to be an element of people who will continue to believe this exestence is something to be done away with in order for some select few who live in just the right way to live forever where as I think Gilly so aptly called it all circus ponies and carnavals. They want to live in a world where there is only the sweet without having to taste the bitter.

I call it fear of living that torments them.

And after that, some enterprising someone will find some new doomsday evenet to obsess over. It's the never ending story.
