Lookbeyond, I don't hate the LDS church. Its not for me, and I left it because it did not work for me. I am sure you are a very nice person, a faithful church member with a strong testimony, and I wouldn't dream of trying to influence you to change that. I cannot comment on what the church teaches now, but I do know that when I was an active member, I was taught that the church's teachings never changed. That it was always led by a prophet of god, and therefore everything it has always taught was true and correct, right from the time of Joseph Smith. History does show that there have been many changes, some very subtle, and which are usually explained away. Research can bring up some very interesting things.
I understand that you wish people to understand what Mitt Romney's religion is, so that people will not be swayed against him because of it. Unfortunately, I don't think that can happen easily without the negative side of history being brought up.

I can't say that I hate LDS, but there was this girl that I liked in highschool that was not allowed to date me because I was not mormon. As such I have some emotional responses to the idea of mormonism at all.

Lookbeyond: "Comments made on this thread are typical of those who are anti-mormon and who are ignorant as to what The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints actually teach and believe." I'm not "anti-Mormon, but when someone throws out a bunch of stuff that requires questioning, I'm gonna question it. "They throw out comments like "why do Mormons teach that brown people are bad."" That was a question, as indicated by the question mark on my post. "We do not teach anything as claimed." You have posted yourself about people of color becoming "white and delightsome". Why would a person of color need to become "white"? "If this thread cannot be about 'religious tolerance" and trying to learn about Romney's beliefs through civil and honest discussion, then my purpose in starting this conversation has been ursurped by those who choose not to learn the truth about "Mormonism"" Your purpose for starting this thread appears to be about campaigning for Romney, and this is not a political board. As was pointed-out, John Huntsman is a Mormon and you don't even acknowledge him. Just how are we being "intolerant" about responding to the stuff that you post? Has anyone here suggested that Mormons aren't free to believe as they wish, or shouldn't be allowed to? I have family members and a great many friends who are Mormon. "......what they fear I do not understand.........." I think that perhaps you are projecting your own feeling upon others. "If you want to ask questions, without already having your answers in place, then I am for helping people to come to a correct understanding about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." You think that is something that is necessary? Maybe if you posted on a Christian board............

As many of us know, simple disagreement is to those looking for opposition considered an attack. Even though it is not.
A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side. Aristotle

Both his and Romney's religious beliefs are of infinitely less concern than their political beliefs. I think Romney's display of personal ethics leaves him unqualified to clean out my cat's boxes....... but I don't suppose it's got diddly to do with his being a Mormon. I think when he's rotted long enough, he might make okay fertilizer, so he'll be useful at last. |

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints deserves more credit for being a Christian denomination than is granted by Dr. Robert Jeffress, Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas. If his comments about the Church are an example of how accurate his teachings are, then I would be one who investigated further on both counts. I would learn for myself from a qualified source what is taught in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and then compare that with what Dr. Jeffress teaches. Then I would compare the Church of Jesus Christ as organized by Christ and is recorded in the Bible. Then, perhaps I could make an informed decision as to who is telling the truth. I would follow the council of James 1:5-6 as I seek my answers. Dr. Jeffress reminds me of those mentioned in the Bible in 2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. 2. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3. Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4. Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5. Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 6. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, lead away with divers lusts, 7. Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. 9. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be made manifest unto all men, as theirs also was. Galatians 1:6. I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7. Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. We would do well to arm ourselves with the knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ as He taught it! Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and his atoning sacrifice; Repentance, Baptism by immersion for the remission of our sins; and receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands by those having the authority. We can learn this from scripture and those so ordained to teach and administer the laws and ordinances of the gospel in these latter-days; living prophets and apostles upon which is the foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints rests, receiving revelation from God in our day, for our needs and for our understanding. Dr. Jeffres, is well educated and has received his authority from those learning institutions who have set themselves up to be authorized to empower him to teach and preach for God........I have no recollection of such being the way one is qualified to be an ambassador for the Lord found in scripture. Take away Dr. Jeffres financial income from his congregation and what is he then? Do we find another motivation for his being a minister; one who teaches for "filthy lucre"? I have many wonderful friends who are Baptist and I respect their beliefs and find them to be good and honest people. My one friend in particular once told me, "I will never speak ill of the Mormons, for I might find out someday they are right." |

I'm not sure the title of "Christian" is really one that you want to be striving for given your evident audience here.
I'll say this though, you're more Christian than I am.

Lookbeyond, wouldn't your concerns be better expressed to the Baptists rather than a mixed bunch of folks? |
