I've been looking at this forum ever since I became a member of Bnet, waaaaayy back in March of '03. Here goes: Why I Like Being... Spiritual But Not Religious FREEDOM!!! Freedom to believe however I want to believe, freedom to believe in whatever god(s)/goddess(es) I choose (as it is, I worship one God, but I see all gods and goddesses as valid--and who knows, I might decide to change and worship some other deity), freedom to believe whatever I want about God (for example: I never refer to God as He or She, but It). Freedom to worship however I want: if I want to dance, I can do so; if I want to just sit quietly and feel It's presence, I can do so; if I want to take a walk (or go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing) and revel in God's majesty in the natural world, I can do so (I believe that God is present not only in Heaven, but also in nature--and that God and Mother Nature are one and the same); if I want to go to church on Christmas Eve, I can do so. Freedom to see the wisdom in other paths and to admire anyone from Christ (a pacifist--yay!) to the Buddha. Freedom from being tied down to a particular set of beliefs (i.e., organized religion). Although I have thought about joining a religion, I've always thought twice about it because if I joined it would be the end of saying, "hey, that's cool--and I, too, believe that!" about another religion. Organized religion is great for some, but it's not for me. At least, not at this point in my life.

I totally agree with you. I don't really like my religion that much, honestly. I mean, there are some things in my religion that I don't want and feel to believe. I am free to believe in any kind of belief in any kind of religion. I'm an Anglican and I believe in God, whom I sometimes call Jehovah. I'm a Christian but I also believe in some Confucian ways and also the Four Noble Truths in Buddhism. Once again, I totally agree with you! |
