As far as I know, Nation of Islam doesn't send out missionaries like that, and certainly not to convert white people. Are you sure, klm, that the guy is part of Nation of Islam and not some legitimate (marginally legitimate) religious group?

I once saw them standing on a street corner with a bullhorn, talking about how black people are the lost tribe of Israel...

Hey all. I was a Mormon missionary nearly 20 years ago. It's a full time 2 year mission, so it's not like it's just easier to get out and knock on doors on holidays or weekends. We knocked on doors whenever, and chances are the reason you see Mormons more often on holidays is because you are home, when normally you aren't. 9 out of 10 homes knocked, no one answers.

But, missionaries don't like knocking on doors. It's ineffective. And they never "target" specific people.  They just teach those who show an interest, whoever they may be. They would rather have people come to them through friends and family anyway. They do have comercials for those who want a free Bible or Book of Mormon.  If you want a visit, the operator routes your information to the local missionaries who call and set up a time for a visit (otherwise the books are just shipped to you). We would get about 5 of those a week. Now they even have a chat room on the website so you can talk to a missionary online.

But when we didnt have anything to do, we usually just talked to people on a busy street corner. You meet a lot more people that way, and if someone is interested in hearing more, we would set up a time to meet. Otherwise, we would just say "have a nice day" I don't think we were ever particularly rude, and most people were nice to us too.

I can't imagine missionaries visiting on Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter. They would be too busy with the church members on those days. and Sundays are pretty busy with church and family dinners too. Oh and one day a week, usually Monday, was our preparation day, the day we did laundry, shopping, etc. so we weren't out then either. But, if it's President's day or Columbus day, or if you are just home from work with a cold, your chance of being visited are much higher. We never did door knocking past 6 PM. We were usually too busy teaching people in the evenings.

Oh, and we never used blowhorns.

We've never had that kind of visitation during a holiday.
I've only noticed it picking up with the warmer weather, though anymore, they seem to avoid our door.

Thank goodness.:)

For some reason, I never thought of that. I guess I didn't want to think that they come around more often than every couple of months! All the more reason to not be a home-body.

I do recall that a couple months ago, I came home one day, and nearly every apartment in my building had a little tract from the Jehovah's Witnesses stuck into one of the door cracks. It was obvious that most people were not home when the missionaries stopped by. And what became of those tracts? Nearly everyone cast them onto the floor of the hallways, where they remained until, a few days later, I got tired of seeing them in the hallways and kicking them with my feet and decided to pick them up and throw them away.

I also recall the first time I ever dared tell the JW missionaries that I was an atheist. Their response was, "So you're a scientist?" and while I explained to them that I was not a scientist, they pulled out a JW tract that condemned evolution and Charles Darwin and thrust it into my hands.

I jsut assumed he was from noi  because he was yelling about the honorable eliah somebody.    and now that it was mentioned he did seem sort of angry.  Maybe he was just trying to goad me or maybe not

Not to derail the thread, but I always find it fascinating there are folks in the 21st century who deny evolution. We also have a token beliefnetter who's geocentric and believes the earth is the center of the Universe.  I can't quite wrap my mind around it some days.

Churchianity, by substituting creed for Christ and dogma instead of the divine facts of being, has stripped Love of her royal robes and has left her standing an unheeded beggar in the universe of God. - Rev. W. John Murray

Oh come on, TED! You work with the public! Surely after all this time, nothing surprises you! :)

Day before yesterday, I had a woman ask for the names and addresses for the King of America (she wasn't sure if there was only one) and the King of Mede. Upon further questioning that proved to be the King of Media. I did not bat an eye but I fear the the Department of Human Resources and FCC will be a little surprised to find out they are ruled by kings.
Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones. Marcus Aurelius
