I think what I'm saying is that if life can be created in a process totally different than how we know life does exist, then we're actually inventing life. That is up one level. I hope that before I leave this world we find extraterrestrial life of some sort. I'd be fascinated to see how much the elements of life on this planet are really essential. Would for instance DNA be required, or could another self replicating molecule work? and so on... |

Designing and building life forms will just be another technology.

If one, say, successfully transplants a Brand-New Chevy Engine into an old Studebaker one has indeed come up with a Novelty ... But it's NOT the SAME Thing as inventing a whole new-improved BMW from The Wheels and Tires on-up ...

But NOT "from Scratch" ... It will be re-Arrangement and re-Combination of existing Parts ...

...For now. It isn't as though there is something intrinsically impossible about starting from the ground up. We just don't have the technology for it yet.

There's a Shop in our Neighborhood that specializes in minutely perfect Restoration of Old Cars ... It is a THRILL to stop in once in a while and see these Guys at work and hear them explain what they're doing ... They not infrequently manufacture new/old Parts then and there ...
