This thread is started in response to multiple ⊠solicitations by Adelphe to deliver on a promise that I made, as far back as 07-06-2008, after Adelpheâs initial prompting âŠ
See what Mr. Kant says! Surely you will listen to him if not me! (And, frankly, I think you already know what Mr. Kant says...)
I must admit that you have done a good research, and you have hit me were it hurts, because you know that I am a great admirer of Immanuel Kant.
I also admit that the in section of his Critique of Pure Reason, from where you have taken your quotations, "The Discipline of Pure Reason in Relation to Proofs", Kant explains why
â ... all transcendental proofs must never be apagogic or indirect, but always ostensive or direct. (I. Kant)â
This argument therefore is serious. In fact it is too serious to confront it here, in few lines. I will therefore confront it separately.
I promise I will, as the Fair Combatant Warrior that I am. [MdS #396]
Over the ensuing months, and even recently, Adelphe has not missed a single opportunity for reminding me of my promise. (which is perfectly fair)
It was my intention to make this an occasion for examining in depth the motivation for Kantâs objection to the recourse to apagoge (bka reductio ad absurdum, from the Latin equivalent expression), a logical procedure whose perfect philosophical character is confirmed by its being often used by Aristotle, and the perfect validity of which is confirmed by its being often used Euclid in demonstrating many theorems of his magnum opus,Elements, âthe most successful textbook in the history of mathematics.â
But, while this would be very interesting from a philosophical POV, it would take us to far from the original purpose of the thread which, letâs recall it here was and is to prove what to me is a self-evident set of axioms, that is âŠ
Axioms of Godâs Foreknowledge vs. Human Freedom
[1] Godâs total foreknowledge is incompatible with genuine human freedom.
[2] God is with us at all times but does NOT know in advance what we'll think or do.
This I have done by apagoge, viz. by proving that the opposite of [1], that is âŠ
[3] Godâs total foreknowledge is compatible with genuine human freedom.
⊠leads to an absurdity, that is (having assumed, as Adelphe does, Godâs total Omniscience) the the affirmation AND to the denial of God's total Omniscience.
I have therefore decided to ... ... and to provide a syllogistic demonstration of [1].
I have already anticipated that I may not proceed to do this without setting a condition. I confirm that I intend to set a condition, which is the following.
Herebelow is the demonstration per absurdum of [1], viz. of the incompatibility of Godâs total foreknowledge with genuine human freedom, which I have proposed in many âvariantsâ, and was already essentially present at the end of post #2.
(D0) âOn day D+0, Ambrose Bierce knows that the following day D+1, as on every week-day, he will get the train from Albany to New Yorkâ
(D1) âOn day D+1, Ambrose freely decides not to go from Albany to New York, but to go to Saratoga Springs insteadâ. (see map)
(D2) If God, at day D (or even from eternity, for that matter), knew already that Ambrose, at day D+1 would have gone to Saratoga Springs, the freedom of Ambroseâs decision (apparently freely taken on day D+1), is a pure delusion.
(D3) If God, at day D, did not know that Ambrose, at day D+1 would have gone to Saratoga Springs, then Godâs omniscience is NOT total: the definition of His omniscience is NOT totalBUT inherent, viz. limited.
Conclusion: .

according to (D2) God is Totally Omniscient;

according to (D3) God is NOTTotally Omniscient.
. Quod Est Absurdum
I will ONLY proceed to provide a syllogistic demonstration of [1] (Godâs total foreknowledge is incompatible with genuine human freedom) on condition that Adelphe affirms and confirms that, although, under the âhigh patronageâ of Professor Immanuel Kant she may not like a demonstration of [1] by apagoge (reductio ad absurdum) nevertheless âŠ
âAdelpherecognizes that the demonstration per absurdum of [1] is perfectly clear, consistent and compellingâ
No more (bur also no less) is required by Miguel_de_Servet to proceed as promised to a syllogistic demonstration of [1].

Mario,
So this is...it?
This is what I have been waiting for?
The resurrection of your lame Ambrose that we already covered in several of the 800+ some posts?
Your argument is circular.
This is what is under discussion:
(D2) If God, at day D (or even from eternity, for that matter), knew already that Ambrose, at day D+1 would have gone to Saratoga Springs, the freedom of Ambroseâs decision (apparently freely taken on day D+1), is a pure delusion.
:o
Unless I am convinced by Scripture and plain reason, my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not retract anything, for to go against conscience would be neither right nor safe. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen.
Yes, it's self-evident that if you have an omni-god, then you can't have theological freewill.
Yes, I have no objection to your solution - the self-castrated omni-god - other than its saleability. Omni-gods who aren't omni fit only a wee niche market.
Aforetimes, I've given Adelphe certain advice on this topic - the substance of which is of course subject to musketeer-and-client privilege - but regretfully she's taken another course.
Blu, hopefully Mario will come up with something better than presenting old news--something that's already been argued that lead to the particular request he referenced in the OP.
What can be concluded here with this piffle? He is between a rock and a hard place.

If you read coolly, calmly and collectedly, I am not saying that what I have presented at the OP is something new. I said clearly that what I have presented is ...
âthe demonstration per absurdum of ... the incompatibility of Godâs total foreknowledge with genuine human freedom, which I have proposed in many âvariantsâ, and was already essentially present at the end of post #2â
What is new is that I have made "synoptically explicit" the absurdity of the the opposite affirmation, viz:
â[3] Godâs total foreknowledge is compatible with genuine human freedom.â
Now, you, under the âhigh patronageâ of Professor ... ... may not like a demonstration of [1] by apagoge (reductio ad absurdum), nevertheless it is a perfectly valid demonstration, and, if you clumsily call it "circular", you simply have no clue what "circular reasoning" (bka "begging the question") is that is, viz. "'begging the question' ... refers to an argument where the premises are as questionable as the conclusion."
Where, pray tell, would be the "questionable premises"? Certainly (D0) and (D1) are NOT "questionable". :o

Mario,
[Patiently, as to a dumb child...]
I gave you the nature of the circularity in my post #4.
Again:
D2) If God, at day D (or even from eternity, for that matter), knew already that Ambrose, at day D+1 would have gone to Saratoga Springs, the freedom of Ambroseâs decision (apparently freely taken on day D+1), is a pure delusion.
Let's break it down to its essence, shall we?:
If God knew Then Ambrose wasn't free
That is precisely what you are (trying) to prove.
This is no reductio ad absurdum argument.
This is no argument at all.

We both know (we ALL know ...) how much you love to indulge in preliminaries, rather than going for a good ... syllogism (:p) ... so we can stay here for another 800 posts, AFAIAC.
Just answer this simple question, if you please: "Did Ambrose still have, on day D+1, the freedom to decide to go to New York, instead of going to Saratoga Springs? YES OR NO?

Revelation is above, not against Reason
âThe everlasting God is a refuge, and underneath you are his eternal arms ...â (Deut 33:27) âDo you have an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his?â (Job 40:9) âBy the Lordâs word [dabar] the heavens were made; and by the breath [ruwach] of his mouth all their host.â (Psalm 33:6) âWho would have believed what we just heard? Even before he made the universe, he knew Ambrose would got to Saratoga Springs, when, how, what he'd wear, who he'd see, every last detail, every quark exactly where he foresaw.
Did Ambrose have a choice NOT to go to Saratoga Springs? He thought he did, but that was an illusion - there was never a second option which he could effect, and without a second option, no question of true choice arises.
The question is the same as, Does Ambrose have the power to show Yahweh's wrong? To make a liar of him? Or even just to take him by surprise? No. Under the omni rules, such things can't be.
Yahweh is omnipresent, throughout time as well as space. At the time Ambrose is setting foot in Saratoga Springs, Yahweh is not only foreseeing this from 14 billion years ago or more, but remembering it from 14 billion years in the future - and from all points between.
No intuition, no empirical evidence, no common sense will ever be enough for our Adelphe, who has grown more ... demanding and sophisticated (philosophically, of course ...) in the meantime. (#)
As for my demonstration by apagoge, per absurdum, funnily enough Adelphe seems to have even forgotten that the reason why she invoked Saint Immanuel Kant, which can NOT possibly be that Kant ever says that demonstrations by apagoge are invalid (Kant would not have dared to utter such enormity...).
The reason why Kant is so manifestly ill at ease with demonstrations per absurdum is because they have often been used by the advocates of his bĂȘte noire, dogmatic metaphysical philosophical systems (e.g. those of Leibniz and of Wolff, in particular), as he explicitly says (and as evidenced also in Adelphe's quotation)
The apagogic mode of proof is the true source of those illusions which have always had so strong an attraction for the admirers of dogmatical philosophy. It may be compared to a champion who maintains the honour and claims of the party he has adopted by offering battle to all who doubt the validity of these claims and the purity of that honour; while nothing can be proved in this way, except the respective strength of the combatants, and the advantage, in this respect, is always on the side of the attacking party. Spectators, observing that each party is alternately conqueror and conquered, are led to regard the subject of dispute as beyond the power of man to decide upon. But such an opinion cannot be justified; and it is sufficient to apply to these reasoners the remark: Non defensoribus istis Tempus eget. ["These advocates" - of dogmatic philosophy - "are certainly not short of Time"]
Each must try to establish his assertions by a transcendental deduction of the grounds of proof employed in his argument, and thus enable us to see in what way the claims of reason may be supported.
While I abhor dogmatic metaphysical philosophical systems just as much as Kant did, OTOH, like the advocates of those systems, I also am certainly "not short of Time" (Non Michaeli Serveti isti Tempus eget ...): so I can wait for Adelphe to revise her ... er ... philosophically demanding and sophisticated (#) stance ... :D
Mario
(#) Interestingly, in a parallel universe specular to ours, called Esnes-Doog, in many other respects similar to ours, the expression "demanding and sophisticated" means "stubborn and obtuse".
