Every time I hear about someone being handed the death penalty my overwhelming feeling is always 'that person might be innocent'. The idea of the government killing someone that may not have done anything wrong often makes me feel every bit as sick as the crime they are accused of. Yes there have been advances in DNA and other forensics, but no matter how far technology has come, innocent people still seem to die die. Killing innocent people is murder. Criminals who make mistakes and later regret them are still held accountable, if courts and judges put an innocent person to death they too need to be held accountable in some way. In my opinion it will never be possible to prove someone guilt 100% all of the time. While throwing an innocent person in jail for 20 years is a dreadful thing to do, they can at least have some hope of being cleared and released one day. |

Alex, I couldn't agree more. Capital punishment presumes that every person, from police to forensics to judge and jury execute their roles flawlessly and, therefore, execution of a person is justified. I remain unconvinced that retribution does not pass for justice in this country.
How strangely will the Tools of a Tyrant pervert the plain Meaning of Words!

Australia abolished this barbaric form of punishment half a century ago and few here in Australia want to see it revisited. The death penalty is for countries like Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Uganda, Syria, China and the USA. |

There are some people who are predators without boundaries. To me the better solution is life without possibility of parole. Even the perston who has been convicted of a single violent crime should be given the same sentence, which allows them time for better testing and more investigation to take place. We can let someone out of prison, but we can't bring them back after we kill them. As a "deterrent" all we've accomplished is that the person who was executed won't kill again. Many of us feel that pedophiles, especially serial pedophiles are deserving of the death penalty for the lives they've ruined and the children who go on to abuse themselves, another lin in a horrible chain. If it is a death penalty crime, it means it is more likely that the victims would be killed so they couldn't testify. I do think that the sentences need to be stiffer than they are in some states. This is another case of keeping someone in prison so they can't re-offend; this is a group with a high recidivism rate. I do realize that pedophiles are considered the lowest of the low by the other inmates. A primitive side of me knows they will be targets and would have to be kept away from them for their own safety. A few years ago a Death Row inmate in Ohio requested his own execution. If someone who knows they will never get out of prison again requests death, is it an execution or an assisted suicide? Or do we just deny them a choice? What do you think?

There is no data to support the idea that the death penalty puts potential witnesses at risk. This is a red herring. People do these things because they think they wont be caught. Whether they kill their victims or witnesses or not is independant of whether there is a death penalty. |

I agree you never know if someone is innocent. With advances made with DNA cases are coming to light about people in prison for years and then discovered through DNA they were innocent all along. Granted there are some crimes that if committed against my family I might change my mind. But then I think what if my son, daughter, father, mother committed the crime. I couldn't bear to know that they would me executed at such and such a time. why have 2 families suffer.
I read an article in a paper ( no proof I never keep the info) where a guy was executed. His mother attended for what ever reason. ( I wouldn't have been able to) When it was over and everyone was leaving in the snow and ice, the prison brought a car around for the victims family. She was made to walk the block. I felt so bad for her. Here her son just died and although she had nothing to do with the crime the prison and those involved treated her terribly. Yes sympathy for the victims family was in order. but couldn't some one have shown some compassion for her also. the death penelty just doesn't sit right with me. My opinion |
