Alex, I couldn't agree more. Capital punishment presumes that every person, from police to forensics to judge and jury execute their roles flawlessly and, therefore, execution of a person is justified. I remain unconvinced that retribution does not pass for justice in this country.
How strangely will the Tools of a Tyrant pervert the plain Meaning of Words!
Every time I hear about someone being handed the death penalty my overwhelming feeling is always 'that person might be innocent'. The idea of the government killing someone that may not have done anything wrong often makes me feel every bit as sick as the crime they are accused of.
Yes there have been advances in DNA and other forensics, but no matter how far technology has come, innocent people still seem to die die. Killing innocent people is murder. Criminals who make mistakes and later regret them are still held accountable, if courts and judges put an innocent person to death they too need to be held accountable in some way.
In my opinion it will never be possible to prove someone guilt 100% all of the time. While throwing an innocent person in jail for 20 years is a dreadful thing to do, they can at least have some hope of being cleared and released one day.
