Oh and mountain man, if you choose to deny the 2006 study put forth by the United Nations about the destructiveness of animal agriculture due to the practice of eating animals. That's your problem.

I'm not ignoring anything. I'm challenging the "facts" you posted. They were not correct and you have not acknowledged that.

Most humans have enough common sense to get the gist of something. Massive water waste, crop and crop land waste...all to feed animals that humans do NOT need to eat. I'm not going to baby sit you and hold your hand if you don't have the common sense to figure it out.

Most people would not be so condescending and hypocritical. They'd start a topic with real facts and stick to that fact instead of jumping all over the place.

A major 2006 report by the United Nations summarized the devastation caused by the meat industry. Raising animals for food, the report said, is “one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global.......

But you were not talking about environmental damage, you were talking about people starving because some people eat meat.

Growing all the crops to feed farmed animals requires massive amounts of water and land...

So do other crops and ZI gave the figures for those. Should we stop eating? Is that what you're saying?

Do what you want mountain man. Common sense tells many humans that feeding 80% of our crops and half of our nations water to "food animals" is STUPID when you realize that we are facing water shortages, global warming, and severe environmental pollution and damage from this practice per the UN report. If you can't quickly get the gist of that then do your own studying to learn more. Keep wasting water, keep eating animals and ignore common sense.

You know what's funny? I didn't need a detailed breakdown about fossil fuels and why it is destructive to our planet. I quickly used common sense, figured it out, and decided to go for solar power and get an extremely fuel efficient vehicle as well as an electric vehicle. Most humans are able to understand after getting the gist of something.

...as is empathy and compassion for animals wasn't enough.

I guess I was waiting for you to do something useful. The wait seems like it's going to be a long one.
On the shower/bath theme there is this gadget one can buy in the UK to make reusing "grey water" easier http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/08 … bath_1.php

I didn't know you were still eating meat hmmmm, are you still commited to stopping or at least eating in a more animal welfare friendly way?

both for the UK but i'm sure any info you need for other countries can be found either via links at these sites or via a quick google search :)
I eat almost exclusively organic.  I eat meat once maybe twice a week.  Other than the little bit of meat, its almost completely vegan.

Thanks for the links!

This guy eats "a little bit of animals" and expects any one to take him seriously. Can you say "hypocrite"?

I wonder if I kill some one just a "little bit", does that mean I really killed them?

Must admit i can't really get my head around someone being veggie/vegan for ages and then reverting to eating meat again even a little.

Still better than eating meat with no thought liek many folks do and organic is always good. so kudos for doing what you can maybe one day you will go further again :)

Once again with the bogus numbers, Sky.
We've posted the correct ones.  No one is going to be fooled.  Why do you keep it up?  You could probably watch a video of chimpanzees ripping a bushbaby to shreds and sharing out the meat, and still claim that chimps are vegetarian.

Great post. I was beginning to get discouraged about the debate part of this forum thinking that maybe it should be moved to the "Faiths and Practices".

My next clothes washing machine will have a grey water switch if I can possibly arrange it. Im also trying to find a foot operated water pump since I figure that the easiest way would be to send the bath water straight out the bathroom window rather than haul it thru the house. Ive also noticed that the house is perfect for solar panels (someday).

Thanks for the CIWF link. I will search for something like that on this side of the water. Here is a study that I like to quote.
"A Swedish study in 2003 suggested that organic beef emits 40 per cent less greenhouse gases and consumes 85 per cent less energy because the animal is raised on grass rather than concentrated feed."

Fortunately, the world of free thought allows for differing views of what is 'right' and 'wrong' and 'necessary.'    It also allows others to refer to your useless analogies as 'useless' if they feel that way.

Thank you, but I'll not use your morals as a framework for my own.  I'll also look after my health in whatever way I see fit, without concerning myself with if you condone or accept my actions, or if you find my particular food choices acceptable or necessary.

I set up my own grey water system. It all goes into a tank and from there I can open a valve to send the water where I want it to go; to a garden or some trees I've planted. It works great. I just rerouted the plumbing under the house and it all works on gravity.

The bigger problem not mentioned yet is the deforestation going on in South America to make pasture land for raising cattle. In the USA most beef cattle are only fed grain in the last month or so. Most of their life is spent on a range eating grass that is watered only by the rain.
