Bandstand featured black artists somewhat before doing so became the norm on American tv. Clark was notable for not making a big deal out of their being black people either. They were presented as talented people deserving of a following. That's more significant in my memories of him than how long he hosted the New Year's Eve thing. |

According to Wikipedia, The Corny Collins show was based on The Buddy Deane Show which was based on Bandstand. It was local in Philadelphia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairspray_(1988_film)
