The UN Human Rights Commission isn't known for being Speedy Gonzales when it comes to resolutions supporting potentially troublesome (for some UN member nations) rights issues - women, children and LGBT, for instance.

Still, it is a start - even if it is weak (23 for, 19 against and three abstentions!), and at least it's out there finally! And it gives those working for civil, equal and human rights for LGT in their home countries some leverage.

For the record, this us how the vote went: (source Associated Press):

I saw that article a few days ago. I remember thinking, it is weak, but at least it is a beginning. Hopefully over time, not too long a time. We can get more forceful condemnation about such abuses from the UN, and the international community.

A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side. Aristotle

My understanding is that it was a rather tepid backing, but it was at least a step.

I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard was not what I meant...

Interesting this was 'sponsored' in part by the U.S. - where one can STILL be fired for being gay in 30 States, where one can STILL not openly serve in the military if one is gay, and where one can STILL not get married to the person one loves if one is gay.

Could we call this, um HYPOCRISY???

"All over the world, people face human rights abuses and violations because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, including torture, rape, criminal sanctions, and killing," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement issued in Washington.

"Today's landmark resolution affirms that human rights are universal," she said, calling it a "historic moment."
