Why would "God" create so many gays and lesbians AND simultaneously encourage the rest of us to persecute them by discrimination and bashing?  It seems not only wickedly perverse on "God's" part, but also cruelly heartless to create same-sex desire and then forbid it's natural and normal expression in attraction, sex, romance, partnerships and marriage.

What's up with that? Is this fair and just and ethical?

Lutz:  If I recall my pastor's explanation for when I asked a similar question (I have a gay son) his reasoning went something like this:

Because Adam ate The Apple and brought sin into this world in the form of Steve to tempt Adam into forbidden sex... so all gays like my son (and even lesbians too) must suffer because Adam ate The Apple.  But God, being a loving and compassionate God (who is moved to tears when even a tiny sparrow falls splat on the ground from its warm nest), gives gays (and lesbians) the unique opportunity to accept God's forgiveness for their God created sinful desires after Adam ate The Apple.  In accepting God's forgiveness they will be rewarded eternal bliss eventually in heaven when they die.  But while living their lives in torment, repression, shame and unfilled dreams of romantic companionship, domestic partnership and bliss, they must remain celibate and happy in loving their Lord, their Creator and Master. Or accept Christian reparative therapy which cost about $1 thousand dollars for the Complete Package offered by our church.

It all made perfect sense to Pastor Hard@ss.  And, no, I'm NOT making this up.

I think about 4% of babies born will eventually be gay or lesbian in that they will have in born, innate same-sex erotic desires; it's not something they will choose.  If we as a society permit/allow/give these adult citizens the same human and civil rights to marry the partner of their choice as we have ourselves (as straight citizens) wouldn't that be an ethical, moral, just and fair things to do for them?  Isn't marriage a good stabilizing thing for two people to commit to... even if they are of the same gender?  And isn't it discrimination without any socially redeeming value, if we as a society withhold marriage from gays and lesbians?

My own belief is that "faith" is not a sufficient reason to deny gays and lesbians their right to the "pursuit of happiness." Religion is irrational, arbitrary, anti-scientific and lacks compassion when it comes to gays and lesbian citizens, in my view.

Yeah, well what is another fairy tale from a book full of them. Might as well make up your own, when you don't know the truth.

Did you ever ask the pastor if he really believed that BS?

Sounds normal to me.

The dwarves of yore made mighty spells,
While hammers fell like ringing bells
In places deep, where dark things sleep,
In hollow halls beneath the fells.

For ancient king and elvish lord
There many a gloaming golden hoard
They shaped and wrought, and light they caught
To hide in gems on hilt of sword.

"dblad":  well, I did ask the pastor about his "reparative" therapy.  He said it would reorient my gay son's sexual/erotic desires to "normality" and into conformity with God's Plan for redemption, salvation and happiness.  I asked for specificity.  He described group conversion involving a fundamentalist Boot Camp (lipstick for lesbians; rough games for gays). I told the pastor my gay son had an honorable military record, high school/college football letters & awards, loved hunting & fishing and was much more masculine than he (the pastor) was.  He then said he had access to conversion drugs and shock treatments.  I asked for documented evidence of successful changes in others and he said he'd get back to me and that he accepted credit cards and checks.  I'm still waiting. So is he. My son's still gay and living with his partner in a 1 bedroom condo they bought together.  My son had no interest in the pastor's plan.

I don't believe my son is sick, nor do I believe scientific evidence supports the idea that sexual orientation can be changed.

Maybe others have had "success" in this endeavor; maybe others with more information can comment on this type of therapy.

I feel the old God of ancient biblical times was much too capacious, mean-spirited and angry about the in-born nature of gays that he himself created... only to encouraged us to torture and destroy them.  That's just plain wrong in my humble opinion.

What is needed today for these enlightened times in the 21st Century of Increased Knowledge about human sexuality is a NEW COMMANDMENT:  Thou Shalt Not Condemn Others For Their In-Born Nature Of Gayness.  I think that would be consistent with the Golden Rule.  Others may disagree, but why?  How would anything be changed or different for the rest of us if we adopted such a New Commandment for the 21st Century?

Holy cow!

Ya know, I don’t know a lot about the Christian beliefs, but maybe some folks need to get a better God or something.

Have heard that some liken God to a father-like figure.  Ever ponder why a father would knowingly (and God is the All Knowing) create a being destined for harm, torment, shame, derision, misery, etc?  Would any parent desire such a life for their child? If one can answer ‘yes’ to this, then I posit that God is very messed up.  Is this the type of Almighty deserving of worship?

We humans are entirely responsible for the suffering caused to same sex oriented individuals (and for pinning this on a faulty understanding of God).  I think we do this out of fear, and to preserve ego (my opinion). Folks are so wrapped up in self they don’t get that differences should be appreciated, celebrated- and revered.  If God is moved to tears for one fallen sparrow, then He’s bawling his eyes out –continually- over what mankind is doing to gays and lesbians.

My understanding of reparative therapy is that is entirely unsuccessful -even damaging.  Might want to peruse some of the posts from the old B-Net- the ones where folks tell their stories. Some involve their experiences with reparative therapy.  I found it most upsetting.

Oh, and another thing, this ‘gays hafta be celibate’ thing.  Why is it always the ones who are married insisting on gays being celibate (or worse, insist gays must marry the opposite gender -even though there’s no interest in doing so)? Look, I don’t know anything about marrying someone one is not attracted to, but I can imagine that prospect being unpleasant to even to think about.  However, telling someone they must practice life-time celibacy is about the most vicious and cruel notion there is- and I do know what I am talking about in this respect.   To those who prescribe such a life- you first.

Your problem, Janeiro, is that you're much too logical, reasonable, thoughtful, and scientific for fundamentalist, gay bashers and those who enjoy the Sport of Gay Denigration.  If we didn't have gays and lesbians to knock about, what would we do?  I mean it's so much fun to invent reasons to do gay put downs and argue about why gays are bad or wrong or something... anything... negative.  Furthermore, Janeiro, you're just plain way too compassionate; and that's just plain wrong.  Surely we can keep reaching and thinking and arguing that gays are not quite right for the rest of us.  Why do you want us to give up the sport of putting gays down? Someday science will rescue us and prove that gays are bad. (And someday my lottery ticket will win the Big One too.)  We must wait for that day.  In the meantime, of course, The Sport of Gay Negativity is much too much fun to give up.

Am I wrong here?

Homosexuality is forbidden.  Period.  End of Story.

Remember, folks, that's where the backstory begins from the beginning; it's God ordained.  Who are we mortals to questions His infinite wisdom and compassionate love for mankind?

God created homosexuality; God can forbid something he created.  It's in the inherent nature of God to do whatever pleases Him... in a very loving, wise and compassionate way, of course. He can order whole tribes destroyed which is in the Holy Record, His Word because of his wisdom and love.  Gays?  Same-sex marriage?  It is forbidden.  Why?

When we all get to heaven, let's ask God:  Hey, what's up with that gay thing you did?
