1943 Guide to Hiring Women
This is too much! I thought you might enjoy this article from the July issue of Transportation Magazine 1943 — If you can get them, pick young married women. They have these advantages, according to the reports of western companies: they usually have more of a sense of responsibility than do their unmarried sisters; they’re less likely to be flirtatious; as a rule, they need the work or they wouldn’t be doing it – maybe a sick husband or one who’s in the army; they still have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently. — When you have to use older women, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Most transportation companies have found that older women who have never contacted the public, have a hard time adapting themselves, are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. It’s always well to impress upon older women the importance of friendliness and courtesy. — While there are exceptions, of course, to this rule, general experience indicates that “husky” girls – those who are just a little on the heavy side – are likely to be more even-tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters. — Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination - one covering female conditions. This step not only protects the property against the possibilities of lawsuit but also reveals whether the employee-to-be has any female weaknesses which would make her mentally or physically unfit for the job. Transit companies that follow this practice report a surprising number of women turned down for nervous disorders. — In breaking in women who haven’t previously done outside work, stress at the outset the importance of time – the fact that a minute or two lost here and there makes serious inroads on schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up. — Give the female employee in garage or office a definite day-long schedule of duties so that she’ll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that women make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them but that they lack initiative in finding work themselves. — Whenever possible, let the inside employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be nervous and they’re happier with change. ---Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. Companies that are already using large numbers of women stress the fact that you have to make some allowances for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and consequently is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day. — Be tactful in issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can’t shrug off harsh words the way that men do. Never ridicule a woman – it breaks her spirit and cuts her efficiency. — Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women. Even though a girl’s husband or father may swear vociferously, she’ll grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this. –Get enough size variety in operator uniforms that each girl can have a proper fit. This point can’t be stressed too strongly as a means of keeping women happy, according to western properties. peace, sydney

My goodness. "female weaknesses"?
"A girl has more confidence and consequently is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day?" I don't even know how to respond to these... |

i.e. Be extra nice to me because I'm a woman? Can't argue with that! Interesting to see how men viewed women as they started to break away from the traditional feminine model. |

Ah it's not that bad really. Condescending for sure but not outright sexist...the article is taking about giving women jobs - certainly a lot better than saying women must not work and should be chained to the kitchen sink or some nonsense like that. I did see one positive - using polite language around women. One of the sad side effects of gender equality is how women are less polite and as a result men and other women will talk filth in professional environments. Perhaps a case of "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" was involved with general western gender liberation - now we can't dress nicely for work, talk decently to each other or give well meaning compliments without it being some gender politics issue...not that I would want to go back to the times where people were literally oppressed and stifled in many cases.

I hate to say it, but I threw away a library full of books that said crap like that it made me so mad.
Although hurting my feelings definitely cuts my efficiency

I actually kept my older books, because it reminds me how far we have come and how far we have gone backwardsand have gained some ground . I actually have a 1796 cookbook. for all 4 english women that could read to adapt to a country that still did not have a grocery store! It was written by a woman for women adapting to a strange land. Reality. Nothing was known about what to eat and how to prepare whatever as far as the English were concerned, the natives tried yet the english did not believe. nor trust . It is a very little book! It does not contain anything about corn, beans or squash! The 3 staples that fed people forever on these shores. English thought food was womens work, the natives knew it took everyone. Who wrote about idiots we once were? Women are pretending to be men in the corporate world suits, ugliness and all and still hit the glass cieling , we are sending mothers into combat, children are starving, health care is not available to everyone and although education is available to everyone, it really isn't. Remember the past, honor it because we are repeating it and making the same mistakes. Becareful about the "idiot" word... look in the mirror first. Then start calling names and making judgements and getting mad about something you can change. It starts at home. Save this history. Laugh and honor what all that meant, in context. Then dare to change history by being a part of the solution. Don't forget to shower once in awhile and be nice! Because us women folk can be VERY sensitive! Especially if we have not worked outside of the home and have relied upon a bunch of burly men that we give birth to and raise to tell us what to do! GEEZ!

Dar, you should publish all your wisdom, (I know you are laughing at that) but I mean it sincerely. You say amazing things and you are sincere and you make a lot of sense. If you published all your posts here (publish in book form) , I could find them in one handy spot and have answer when my silly mind goes blank.
You are amazing. (I know you laughing again,) but it's true.
