Why are conservatives afraid of gay marriage?

One thing I've never understood is why conservatives are so afraid of gay marriage? How does that effect their own marriage? Or will suddenly everybody turn gay just because they're allowed to marry? Does that mean that there are zillions of closets gays hidden in hetero couples?

I personally can't understand how a man could love a man but hey, if they feel like that, who am I to criticize or judge their love or what they do at home? That doesn't concern me any more like what my straight neighbors are doing, or not doing, in bed.

So seriously: why this irrational, unfounded fear? Or is it simply an expression of their 'disgust' of homosexuality? But even then, why do they care so much what other people do (at home)?

They can't bear anyone they don't approve of to find happiness, imo!

Would this not be better suited to either the "Politics" or the "Sexuality" boards?

But the question concerns the christian view? And christian views are defined by Christianity, no?

You said "conservatives".

Conservative isn't exclusively Christian.

I used 'conservatives' because I didn't want to use the word fundies ... so there are non-christian conservatives who feel threatened by gay marriage to? Do you feel threatened?

I keep hearing from various conservative ch-tians  that it will somehow undermine traditional marriage. I would love the ch-tians hear to tell us how it is.

One ch-tian  person,  on another board said homosexuality is wrong because they were having sex outside of marriage, that it is the sin, so why not let them get married?
A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side. Aristotle

I mean, I could understand that people think that it is wrong or a sin but why do they feel that the traditional form of marriage is threatened thereby?

Actually, there is a sexual orientation board and a christianity and homosexuality board wherein this question might be better discussed--simply because historical this question has caused flame wars.

I hear a lot of people say that once we allow gay marriage, heterosexual marriage will fall apart and no one will have kids.

????

I'm not going to divorce my husband and marry a woman just because it is legal.  I think the government should issue only a civil union.  If individuals want to marry in addition, this can be done in their respective religious beliefs--and there are Christian churches who would happily perform marriages for same sex couples.  Indeed, they already do, it is just that these religious marriages are not recognized by the government in most of the US.

I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard was not what I meant...

I was looking for the christianity & homosexuality board but couldn't find it?
