In his furor over the lesbian teens that were voted as "cutest couple" in their yearbook, Bill O'Reily was quick to set guest, Laura Berman, straight about the difference between "who you are" and "what you do". But I've looked and I'm lost. What exactly are they doing? I'm joking, of course. I know they aren't doing anything...that is nothing that millions of heterosexual teens in schools all over, don't do. So why the singling out of these girls? Honestly, I don't know if I've seen a better demonstration of how bankrupt the "behavior" argument. really is. Just when I thought that hand-holding between gay men or lesbian women hands was the new "homosexual behavior"..... Visibility must be the newest. |

I disagree with you. I highly doubt that millions of heterosexual teens are kissing someone of their own gender. Just kidding, yes without doubt millions of mixed-couple teens kiss every day. While O'Reily seems to think that the two girls being voted "Cutest Couple" is mostly about giving the administration a hard time...I think it is mostly about high school student that are just fine with same-gender couples. Here is an article by Dr. Berman from yesterday's Chicago Sun Times Newpaper: http://www.suntimes.com/lifestyles/berm … 12.article On the topic of O'Reily, I have mixed thoughts. 15years ago I would have cheered him as an ally! Today, I view him as a dinosaur. However, he is probably a good bridge to move people who are even more bigoted than he....closer to understanding and acceptance of queer people. He has a very large following with older people....and, comes across as very fatherly to many 35-45 year olds. And, I highly doubt his stance is moving anyone from acceptance to a place of greater bigotry.
Peace!

It would probably be too much to expect O'Reilly to get a life?
Besides, if the kids were doing it just to "tweak the adults", he surely fell into that trap hook, line, and sinker. What a maroon.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard was not what I meant...

Just like the photos of that hockey player for the Leafs in which he is touching tongues with a 'buddy'.

I think the key to this is that people such as O'Reily look at gays as though they are broken heterosexuals. So, they are doing something that is against their (O'Reily types) nature. IMO, the two girls were just being who they are by kissing.
This is one of the things that consistently astounds me about people who claim that homosexuality is "unnatural." Obviously, if you're straight, then it's unnatural for you, and if you're gay, then it's just the reverse. That can't possibly be difficult to figure out...can it? I guess what that claim boils down to is a purely self-centered worldview. The idea that "well, if I wouldn't do it, then by extension it must be wrong for anyone else to be doing it..." I just find it hard to believe that adults can think that way. And not just a few along the fringe, but a good many of them. |
