Ell--you said--

"find it interesting how people always throw around what they think "Jesus" said or preached, but have no respect to how his words got published."

And then I replied with some Qs and thoughts in post 23--which it seems you didn't read?

I must disagree with you Reteach, could you show me where there are any Church teachings that have anything to do with the subject of Nuremburg?

Is that where that saying came from? My Mom used to say it all the time. I thought it was from 'Poor Richards Almanac', she was always quoting that. :) She loved Ben Franklin.

RE,

Was it this thread that I asked you to tell me whether or not I am sinning by believing that homosexual acts are sinful?

BTW, I am not fixated on only gay rights. I am also fixated on universal health care.  I don't like seeing people being hurt.  I especially don't like seeing people hurt in the name of God.[/QUOTE]

On that we are in total agreement. Healthcare is in a state of anarchy in this nation.

I'm not REteach but I'm guessing that

"Do unto others as you wish for them to do unto you" would qualify.

Also--the Church's teachings on Social Justice.

WG,

You said that you didn't understand what I was saying and I explained in detail.  I am wondering what you don't understand about my response to you.

I made the statement that I find it interesting that some people will use the words of Jesus without actually giving any credence to the authority of those who gave the world the words that Jesus spoke through their God given interpretation.

In other words, why do you think Jesus said what you think he said about how to treat people, are you sure that is the only subject he spoke about and that there is not more to the story?

Yes.  Are you familiar with Vatican II? Dignitatis Humanae?

It is in accordance with their dignity as persons-that is, beings endowed with reason and free will and therefore privileged to bear personal responsibility-that all men should be at once impelled by nature and also bound by a moral obligation to seek the truth, especially religious truth. They are also bound to adhere to the truth, once it is known, and to order their whole lives in accord with the demands of truth... Wherefore every man has the duty, and therefore the right, to seek the truth in matters religious in order that he may with prudence form for himself right and true judgments of conscience, under use of all suitable means.

Truth, however, is to be sought after in a manner proper to the dignity of the human person and his social nature. The inquiry is to be free, carried on with the aid of teaching or instruction, communication and dialogue, in the course of which men explain to one another the truth they have discovered, or think they have discovered, in order thus to assist one another in the quest for truth.

Moreover, as the truth is discovered, it is by a personal assent that men are to adhere to it.

On his part, man perceives and acknowledges the imperatives of the divine law through the mediation of conscience. In all his activity a man is bound to follow his conscience in order that he may come to God, the end and purpose of life. It follows that he is not to be forced to act in manner contrary to his conscience. Nor, on the other hand, is he to be restrained from acting in accordance with his conscience, especially in matters religious. The reason is that the exercise of religion, of its very nature, consists before all else in those internal, voluntary and free acts whereby man sets the course of his life directly toward God.

Saying "my superiors told me to do this or believe that" is not good enough.  We have to form our own conscience, and we are then duty-bound to follow it.

BTW, a Catholic should do 3 things to form a conscience--study the Bible, study the teachings of the RCC and pray.  I have, and now I therefore have a duty, according to the RCC to follow my conscience.  Not yours, not the pope's, mine.
I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard was not what I meant...

I answered it by quoting Jesus.  You should be able to figure out which verses apply without me having to repost them.
