Do you have access to both real sugar and soda water? You could mix your own. I like to make my own cream soda with pure vanilla, agave syrup, real sugar, and soda water.

Care to share the recipe?  Sounds good.

I never used a recipe. I just poured a little pure vanilla extract, sugar, and honey into a tall glass, then poured soda water over it and stirred. Being too lazy to make a formal recipe, I just added more of the flavoring as needed.

Notice I said "honey." That's the traditional sweetener for cream soda. I have since replaced it with agave syrup.

Well, all right then.

Question: Is it legal to sell raw milk in America?

It varies by state.  Just by the way, it was made illegal to sell it in Wisconsin recently.

A few decades ago, I read of a study that proved (and this was confirmed by subsequent studies) that consuming preservatives actually preserved humans.  Mice and humans who ate food with preservatives aged more slowly than mice and humans who ate food without preservatives.  (I don't think life-spans were affected, only the general condition of the body.)   I'll have to dig to find this, but I remember laughing out loud when I read about the confirmations (I married a scientist and know to wait for peer-review results before forming an opinion or changing my behavior).  Everything depends upon the individual's reactions to the specific chemicals used as preservatives, of course, but, in general, what preserves your food also preserves you.

TBH, that never even occured to me. Right now, I drink Coke and Dr. Pepper but I'll have a go at making some lemon/lime in the near future.

Sure, it's to keep the milk from spoiling, but it is also to kill disease-causing microorganisms.  The whole point is to ensure that harmful bacteria are destroyed, and pasteurisation can prevent such diseases as typhoid, diptheria, and scarlet fever, among others.

Even if there are only a few cases of these diseases each year, nobody would want to be one of those cases if it could be prevented by heating the milk.

When I was a kid (40's-50's) we drank pasteurized milk but not homogenized. Cream settled on the top of the bottle. My parents often put the cream in their coffee. They also used EVO in their coffee.

Hi Hatman, just a reflection on your mention of formic acid:

My grandfather related that when he was a young man he spent some time working in the Maine woods. One of their great treats in the wintertime was to come upon a log filled with hibernating ants. They would scoop them up to eat by the handful. Said they tasted much like dill pickles.

Grandpa was natural man.

Another reflection on formic acid -- it's what gives stinging nettles their sting, and man, does it ever sting! The pain lasts about half an hour. I'm cultivating stinging nettles this year for their nutrient content, but it's difficult to handle them.

What is amaranth?  I looked it up, do you make your own red food dye?

Amaranth is a supergrain from Mexico. It's what fed the Aztec Empire until Cortes burned all their fields. It's high in protein and minerals and is low-glycemic. Physically, it's a very small grain.

Which is why they started using it, years before the chemical effects of HFCS were known. Sugar is comparatively expensive so manufacturers tended to only use a little. HFCS is cheap so they can use a lot (and, of course, we now know that, while it's not addictive, it does stop you feeling full).

One reason HFCS is so cheap is that the corn industry has been subsidized by our tax dollars since about 1973. If not for the subsidies, corn would be a business loss. The corn that the US grows with its tax subsidies is about a notch below pure trash. It was modified and selected for its starch and sugar content. It's certainly not the corn that the Native Americans ate.

Good riddance to it someday, I hope.

That said, pretty much every soda uses HFCS these days. If I could find a soda in this country that used real sugar, I'd drink it.

And there, I leave the discussion because I have absolutely no idea. I do know that it's perfectly legal to sell raw milk and raw milk products here as long as they're properly labelled.
