I had a clingy Kitty (aka the Annoying Little Animal) who was named Smoochie. He was very cute which was what kept me from wringing his little furry neck on several occassions. I loved the little guy - but he sure could be demanding and annoying. I solved the cat on my lap/on the keyboard/meowing at me while working on the PC or sitting at the kitchen table (reading or doing homework) by adding a chair for the cat next to me. I sat in the People Chair and the cat got the "cat chair". Unfortunately it worked too well. I had to add a second chair with a cat bed no less for the Queen of the House. Yes, there were 3 chairs in front of the comptter so we could ALL enjoy some together time while I got work/homework done... I could pet the kitties until they settled down to nap. I added cat chairs at the table too. Putting a towel or cat bed or Purr Pad on the chair helped to encourage the cats to hang out on their chair. If your kitty is looking for cuddle time... and you are really busy... maybe it's time to institute a 15 minute Cuddle every morning or evening. I would spend between 10 -15 minutes each morning petting and playing with the Smooch, The Queen of all She Surveys and AndyCat all the while telling them how I didn't have time to be scratching ears, rubbing chins and tossing mousies across the house. Smooch was still clingy but not as bad. I think he got "clingy-er" because he could sense I was tired and stressed so he tried his best to "love me" more... They've all gone on to Cat Heaven. I don't think I will ever be loved like Smooch loved me ever again. :)

In your first post, you said that this cat has always been clingier than the others to some degree but that it has worsened. It may be that the cat senses that you have less time for him now. I have cats that require more attention. At the moment, I don't have anyone that I would call clingy but I do have a couple that must have a certain quota of attention. WinniePoohBear and Jasper are brother and sister. I pretty much have to make time for them. It is sort of like food and water for them. Other pet members in the family are more flexible about these things. I have a couple that rarely want attention. They are just all different.
If I were to suddenly get too busy for them, Winnie and Jasper would most likely act out. They probably would become more demanding. I spend a lot of time every day hugging and petting because I have so many pets. That is just part of it.
I realize that life does get in the way of our best laid plans. Sometimes, it is the best we can do. However, if possible, you might try setting some time aside just for the clingy cat. Unless there is a physical problem as AS suggested, chances are, this cat won't change.

This is a 7 year old feline who's started acting up in recent months... have you considered taking him into a vet for a checkup?
He's always been needy to at least some degree, but he's ramped it up over the last few weeks.
My guess is that he's reacting to *something* external, such as the bad weather or some other stuff that's going on. Another thing I'm looking at is that his mother has been back in the neighborhood off and on, so that might be doing something as well.
As it is, the roads are slowly getting too dangerous to drive on. So taking him in right now might not be an option.

Hi Ironhold.... I have 2 fuzzy feline friends. I work from home... One of my cats is a big mushkitty but when he tries to climb onto my lap while I'm at my desk working, I set him down on the floor. He doesn't make an issue out of this.
Any other changes in your household that could account for this odd behavior? New litter, new food, new detergents/pillows/toys that he may be allergic to? Is he eating/drinking/evacuating as he used to?

i was going to ask if you had other pets... and you do and they aren't company enough it sounds.
two baby gates? i read that on a website... but no, not if he rips up the carpeting.
what else have you tried?
At this point, I'm ready to give "pouring beer in his milk" a try.

He can jump over baby gates, and he responds to being locked out by ripping apart the carpeting and taking it out on the other animals.

i feel for you. since the economy tanked, i've had a nightmare schedule... two jobs, 16 hour work days with all the home chores left to do after. how big is your place? any way to set up kitty and no kitty zones? like with baby gates or a closed door?

I've tried doing things with him on my lap. He just gets jealous and tries to disrupt what I'm doing, such as sitting on what I'm reading or nipping at me if I try to work the keyboard.
And while I prefer to do most of my reading in between commercial breaks, I can't even do that anymore; if he's awake and he knows I'm reading, he'll come up and sit on what I'm looking at. I have to break the daily papers up into piles because it's the only way I get to read some days; even if he sits on one pile, I've got two or more others I can still look through.

work with the little guy on your lap? i do that with my dog, who acts like a cat - but admittedly, my dog is couch potato-ey. she's not too squirmy, except for the nudges to keep petting.
here is a thought: you might consider studying in short bursts... 15 minutes, then 5 minutes break where you pet the cat. i was learning more about the brain and studying, and sitting still for hours the way we do isn't conducive to brain function.
