I have a soft spot for critters and regularly throw bread, crackers, nuts and cereal out in the yard for the birds and the squirrels. I then complain when the squirrels start digging in my planters and the garden beds so I use chicken wire and red pepper flakes to keep them out of there. We have tree squirrels here, aka tree rats. What kinds of critters are about on your property? What steps do you take to keep them from getting where you don't want them? |

We have lots of lizards running about, but heres the real story. We have three black squirrels and one beige one that come to our house to get the peanuts that I put out. If the neighbors new I put out peanuts I would be shot at sunset! lol! They fight over them, and some get buried in our yard but others get put in the neighbors yards also. I dig out the peanuts and put them back in the dish that I use to feed them the peanuts. ;oP lol! We also have Blue Jays and Black Crows that try to sneak the peanuts. Now here is a cute story. Saturday, the 4th of April, there were two telephone guys up on the pole in our neighbors pole, next door doing some work when one of them found in a black bag (it hangs up on the pole for some reason) two baby black squirrels. He told my neighbor they couldn't stay there so she got a shoe box and he put them along with the nest in the box, and she set it in a corner of her yard away from any predators (cats, hawks etc). Well, later in the day the mother squirrel went to check on her babies and saw they were gone. She went down the fence to the redwood trees in the backyard behind us. She went up in the redwood tree and was making the most unusual noise. If it were squirrel talk, you would have thought she were saying, my babies, my babies, my babies. My neighbor then put them on the roof of her kids sand box thinking they would see their babies and come and get them. I saw the dad get pretty close to where they were and sniff and look around then run for the redwood tree. I told my husband he was going to tell his wifey squirred that "he found them but wasn't sure just where they were." "That he could smell them but just couldn't tell where they were at." And that his wifey said "aww you've had to much berry juice, your drunk, you don't know what your talking about." Because she didn't come down to look, after he ran up the tree. Finally my neighbor took them back to the corner, as it was getting dark. She checked the next moring around 11:30 a.m. and the babies were gone. There wasn't any blood or anything so figured the mom or dad or both came and got them It looks like the bag up in the telephone pole may be full again (they probably put the babies back there again!). I took some pics with my camera of the babies while they were in the box. They couldn't open their eyes yet, but they had all of their fur. They were really cute. That's the end. The babies made it, and the mother is happy and the dad well what can I say......

Just want to say I love that squirrel story. They are pesky critters but sure are cute. I went out this morning to have a look at my front containers and saw where they'd been digging goodness only knows for what. All that's in those pots is mums that I planted last fall and some pansies. I wonder how much food a squirrel actually has to eat in one day in order to be healthy. They're always picking in our garbage cans. We have brown squirrels here. The only time I've seen a black one was at a zoo. I use that plastic critter mesh to keep them out of my stuff. Guess I need to put some in those planters too. |

Last Sunday afternoon a boomer was grazing the front lawn of the house opposite.
I tried not to disturb the eastern grey.
But he obviously noticed me.
I had trouble framing a photo without overly disturbing him.
But he hopped off to the neighbouring verge.
There he looked back at me.
