sigh,,,,,no layoffs, firings, etc yet,,,,,,but DH works for a company that makes roofing shingles,,,,,where he used to have 60+ hours a week, we're lucky if he gets 40 now,,,next week he has 24 hours,,,,where they used to send 70 trucks a day out of the plant, now they send 70 a week,,,,,,he's lucky he's in maintenance, frankly,,,,,if he was in production, he wouldn't have a job right now,,,,,and even if they start laying off maintenance, he has a good record, and 8 years with the company, which means he's number 5 to go,,,,,not number 1,,,thank God, though I worry about all of them down there,,,, The hotel I work at just got bought out,,,,,I used to work just 2 days a week,, but I managed to pick up a 3rd, and am hoping for a 4th,,,,,,,,but I'm worried, because I have 5 herniated discs, and if I end up missing 2 weeks of work due to not being able to walk, I could easily be fired,,,,,I'm working very hard to be indespensible,,,,,,taking extra hours when they need me to, not calling out sick, doing extra jobs for them,,,,,,hopefully that will work,,,,,,there's a foolish young girl who works there who hasn't figured out yet that the economy is bad and she could be fired easily, and I know she's the first to go if someone has to be fired,,,,,she's pregnant, and calling out sick every week for morning sickness,,,I know they're documenting things like text messaging at work and too many sick days to fire her,,,,,,I feel for her, but frankly, if you're not willing to do anything to keep your job right now, you don't deserve it,,,,,,,,,,and I can pick up some of her hours if she doesn't appreciate them,,,if she wasn't pregnant, I know she'd already BE fired,,,,,,,but they have to be careful and document so that it can't be said she was fired for being pregnant,,,,, all in all, I'm worried and anxious right now,,,,,I've saved my tax refund this year to live on in case,,,,,,,We usually buy something fun or go on vacation,,,,not this year,,,,we'll be ok, though,,,,,,, but the GOOD thing, I think, is that we are all learning the value of a dollar and what is TRULY a necessary item,,,,,,we're considering giving up our cell phones and cable (or at least cutting back to minimum),,,,,,my youngest daughter, 17, is looking for a part-time job, and my middle child (21) is pitching in finanacially more,,, that can only be a good thing. I spent less for the holidays this year,,,,,,,and bought on sale all summer,,,,got some really good deals,,,,so even though I spent less, we had an awesome holiday season,,,,I've already started buying for next year,,,,when I find something seriously on sale, I buy it and toss it in the closet,,,,,everyone will at least have a few presents, even if it's a bad year,,,,, this past year, the kids all decided to spend max of 5.00 on eachother,,,,,they really had to think about gifts,,,,,and honestly?? It was really awesome,,,,,they had a ball,,,bought really great things that they KNEW the other would like,,it was all about atmosphere this year,,,,,not the number and cost of the gifts,,, We have more of a depression mentality,,,,,,use it up, wear it out, or do without,,,,I want new sneakers,,,,a year ago, I'd have bought them,,,,,,there are no holes and they're still good, so I'm not buying any,,,,,I buy alot of jeans at yard sales and goodwill,,,,,,jeans are jeans,,,,it's better for the planet too,,,,,our entertainment has gotten cheap,,,,,movie rental and popcorn made at home,,,,board games, and television,,,,,McDonalds dollar menu when we eat out, which is much less frequent,,,,and buying meat on sale and freezing it for meals,,,,I'm buying all meat I can find when it's cheap and freezing it, pasta and canned goods,,,we could eat for a month on what I've got if DH gets laid off,, Holly
