I wonder if sugary and fatty foods aren't addictive to some extent.

I'm endeavoring to eat lots less meat, and it's difficult to feel as satisfied with a few nuts, raw veggies and fruit compared with a burger and fries.

I know, also, when eating red meat regularly, I crave sweets much more.

Never did like vegetables or fruit as well as meat, potatoes, bread and desserts.

It can be really difficult changing your diet as dramatically as Mr. Clinton has. Kudos for him!

One of the posters to the comments section following the linked article raised an interesting point: That Bill Clinton is apparently doing this for health reasons rather than for ethical/moral reasons. Perhaps one could also add religious/spiritual reasons alongside ethical/moral reasons, since the religious and ethical reasons often appear to be go hand-in-hand.

I have a couple of points

1. they did a study with self-described vegetarians, about 60% of these vegetarians ate meat within the last day or so of being questioned.  So I think for many, many people identifying as a vegetarian or a vegan does not necessarily mean you always abstain from that animal product.

Weird I know.  So I would not be shocked to learn that Clinton who sees himself as a vegan eats an egg or some fish or even a bit of meat once or twice a week.    I think this is more true of those who are vegan/vegetarian for health reasons vs. ethical.

2. I totally applaud and hope Clinton gets lots of press for his lifestyle changes.  Too many Americans when they are diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes or high blood pressure say "where are my perscriptions"  "give me some pills".  We need more examples of people like Clinton who were able to change their lifestyle and are now enjoying great health and are not slaves to meds.

I agree that is commendable. I wonder what his girlfriends are eating.

Dot--hi. I don't know if this fits in with yiur deit but Legumes like chick peas (garbanzo beans) Pinto beans, Black beans etc have tons of protein and because they are metabolized slowly over a long period of time do usually create a feeling of fullness/satisfaction for quite a while.

I often combine them with fish like tuna for a salad that is a full and satisfying meal--and that's after weightlifting etc when my body is craving protein.

As I said--make sure that this is okay with the diet you have been given.

As with you I don't find veggies particularly filling/satiating--but I do like them as a snack--like carrots etc--instead of snacking on something full of fat like chips....I am retraining msyelf to reach for some veggies instead of snack food when I do get those cravings.

Yeah, WG, I know beans are filling, but I don't like them that much either.

Chickpeas as hummus, pretty good with rice chips. Refried beans made with lard even better.

I'm gradually altering my diet. The Babycakes Bakery cookbooks have some wonderful vegan recipes made with healthy flours and agave. Made a pineapple upside-down cake a few days ago that's better than it was out if the oven. I figure I can limit myself better when I know I'm eating a low-glycemic cake or cookie. I could drink agave nectar out of the bottle, I like its mild sweetness and flavor that much.

Dot--I like hummus too. I eat it with pita and some fresh fruit--I fidn that citrus goes with it especially well.

Also--I don't much like legumes by themseklves--which is why I add them to tuna or whole grain pasta.

One of my vfave dishes is black beans and rice and corn and avocado....all mixed together and topped with salsa....mmmm.
