The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is a classical text describing Hatha Yoga. It is said to be the oldest surviving text on Hatha Yoga. Swami Swatmarama, a disciple of Swami Goraknath, wrote the text in the 15th century CE, drawing upon previous texts and his own experiences. While the text describes asanas (postures), purifying practices (shatkarma), mudras (finger and hand positions), bandhas (locks), and pranayama (breath exercises), it also explains that the purpose of Hatha Yoga is the awakening of kundalini (subtle energy), advancement to Raja Yoga, and the experience of deep meditative absorption known as samadhi.

I suffered a car accident 27 years ago where I was a pedestrian, I had massive soft tissue damage along with broken bones. Now I have cervical and lumbar herniated disc and degenerative arthritis. I lead an active lifestyle, I run, cycle, hike and surf, so I haven't let it slow me down. I just have a lot more pain than some people. About a year ago I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I understand this is not uncommon for individuals that have suffered major trauma. I began practicing yoga to improve my flexibility hoping to decrease risk of injury and pain. Well, my quality of life has improved markedly. I sleep better, which takes care of several symptoms of the fibromyalgia, that I think are just symptoms of chronic sleep deprivation. I run better, cycle harder and all around feel more balanced in mind and body. So I say try yoga! Just make sure you start at a level comparable with your health and fitness level. I hope this helps anyone suffering from this often misdiagnosed condition.
Good Luck
