"No waterfall for me, so head for the horses.  That ok with both y'all?  It will at least get us off the water, away from the current, and we can sit down and talk it over on shore."

Paddling with everything they had, the three of them got the canoe to the shore and beached it, flopping themselves down on the sand, grinning at each other.

"Got it," NHT laughed, "but I had some worries for a bit there.  That current just got faster and faster, and just ahead, looks to me like there's a whirlpool, too.  Did either of you see it?"

Lap nodded her head yes, but JB shook hers for a no.  "I was too focused on the shore to notice that, and I can't see it from here.  Hey, at least we missed it.  Ever wonder if it would be possible to go down inside a whirlpool and then come back out of it?  Has it ever been done?  I mean, no way am I offering to try it, I'm just curious about it, is all.  No?  Oh, well, just one of those thoughts," she giggled.

NHT asked if all three were content to ride the horses to see where they went, or would it be better to go back across the river and find Merlin?

JB decided she was content with the horses, but also, being relatively adaptable, would go with majority opinion.  She did remind the other two that getting back across the river, against the current could be risky, as well as difficult.  Probably the only way would be to portage the canoe back upstream for about half a mile, and try to get across.  Lot of work involved in that, she remarked.

"Well," said Lap, "I think what I would like to do is..."

IRL: I've read Winnie the Pooh, but not Confucious or the Tao.  Any particular reason for asking or just wondering?  Actually, no, I haven't read Pooh, duh...told a lie, didn't mean to.  I've heard bits and pieces, and read little bits of him here and there.  Tigger is my favorite character.

Today is the day that the Lord hath made; we shall rejoice and be glad in it.

HUGE SIGH! Never read Pooh or The Tao of Pooh? Oh, JB, my heart is breaking for you. Well, that gives us a goal, doesn't it; besides just trying to make it across the river. I have a copy back at the Lodge, (no, honesty in real life, I'm mailing you a copy, because no one, no one should have to go through life without reading The Tao of Pooh), so that is where we are going to head. On the horses. Not my favorite kind of transportation, but it is quicker then walking, and I DON'T want to paddle the canoe upstream.

In fact, I don't want to carry it, so I'm going to suggest an experiment, concerning your wonderings about whirlpools.  Here, NHT, give me a bottle of one of your lesser needed medicine concoctions, okay?  Then we can each right a short note, put it in the bottle, then put the bottle in the canoe, send it into the whirlpool, and see if we ever hear back, okay?

Well, since NHT didn't have any real objection, the ladies wiped citronella oil all over themselves, to discourage insect bites, then used the citronella bottle for the notes.  Some pine sap from a local tree made great glue for the bottle, the oars were properly placed inside and off the canoe spun, into and down the whirlpool.

I hate carrying canoes (especially in real life, my dad had his own, that I inherited before donating it to the local conservation society).

Now, who is going to ride which horse, since they appear to have appeared in three separate colors and breeds.  The white arabian, the chestnut thoroughbred or the black quarter horse.....decisions, decisions, decisions.

Hmmm, appears it was the horse's decision.  The glossy black nudges Lynne in the back and flat she falls, on her face, to busy talking and not paying enough attention.

JB doubled over laughing at the look on Lap's face when the quarter-horse knocked her down.  "Well," she laughed, "I guess you don't have to make a choice at all, Lap.  He's probably the fastest of the three, too, so better hang on.  I'll take the big brown one, he looks strong enough to carry my weight easier than the other two, I think.  I've always felt sorry for horses when us fat folks get on 'em and expect them to carry us around for a while.  Besides, that gorgeous Arabian keeps taking sneaky little steps towards Nay, trying to tell her something, I think.  Hey, listen, y'all know we've got an apple apiece in our pockets, right?  So let's each give our mount an apple."

"JB," said Nay in a strange voice, "we haven't had apples in our pockets.  What are you talking about?"

"Um, yeah, I know we haven't had, but, uh, we do now.  Look and see."

Nay and Lap looked at each other in amazement.  At the same time, they both said, "JB, how did you know?  How did you do that?"

She just looked at them and shrugged.  "I dunno, I just knew.  It's no big deal, I reckon Merlin or somebody or somethin' figured that the horses would like us better if we gave them apples.  C'mon, feed 'em, let's get mounted up and head em' out...Rawwwhiiiiiiide!"

All three of the friends laughed and mounted up.

"How do we know which way to go," asked Lap?

"We don't," said Nay.  "Just nudge the horses and they will take us wherever we have to be."

"Hey, Lap?  That was a great idea about the notes and the whirlpool.  I wonder if we'll ever see the canoe again?  Wonder if we'll get any kind of answer from the notes?  It's so freaky around here I bet we do," laughed JB.

IRL:  Thanks for The Tao of Pooh in advance, lol.  Definitely looking forward to reading it!

what a strange dream, she thought awakening  –
never been in a canoe let alone paddled one

she opened her eyes and looked around, but didn’t recognize anything. so it was mostly to herself when she asked “where am i?”

“feeling better?” a voice came out the shadows followed by a body.

she tried to sit up to see but the pain in her head mutinied her action, and she saw the speaker as she lay back down. “Merlin?”

“You took quite a fall,” he said.

“a fall? she asked.

all business-like and matter-of-fact, he held his half bent billiard pipe in his teeth as he spoke…

“i’m not surprised you don’t remember – enemies – they were using the energy of your weight as a counterbalance hoping to cause the canoe to flip; actually i was minding my own business when i was suddenly told to get you out of there … so i did – otherwise tragedy … only i think you’d realized the same thing at the same time, and my force was doubled by your own intention – you hit your head pretty hard when you landed here …”

he shrugged blowing smoke rings. “sorry.”

NHT screwed her face up at his nonchalance, and said, “always the charmer, Merlin - What about Lap and JB … ’they okay?”

“yeah, they’re ok,” he replied, “confused – JB thinks she saw you heading toward the Lodge - i don't know what Lap thinks"  he shrugged again – “she'll figure it out ” and sent a small smoke ring through a larger one after which he seemed quite pleased with himself.  “Hey, i think i’m getting the hang of this…”

NHT couldn’t help but roll her eyes – “'quick learner – how many centuries 'you been blowing smoke rings?”

Merlin laughed heartily. “I always have loved your humour."

“Idiot,” she said which made him laugh again.
“You said something about enemies?” she asked him

“ah, yes” he said nodding … “Seth Jr unwittingly led them here – minions of developers wanting to turn this place into a mini-Las Vegas – they have a black witch working with them.”

“Seriously?” NHT squinted at the magician - past history didn't make trusting him easy for her.

“…as a heat attack,” Merlin said in a way that spoke truth …  “Problem is Seth doesn’t quite understand the complexities of what this place is;  you guys have to show him … that’s the only way he’ll be able to tap into his father’s magic and protect this place …"

he paused. "it’s why he’s come here … he put a bid out into the universe long ago for the understanding  held by his DNA, his father’s DNA.”

NHT closed her eyes and sighed.
Lovely.

And opened them back up again to find herself riding the Arabian. Going to take some time to sort this out, but meanwhile the horses are heading up the road to the lodge....where a long, black limousine stands parked before the door.

"Wow," says Lap, "not the usual kind of car for this place, wonder who has come for visit?"

NHT startles from her tranced state.  "Check out that license plate. NOT a local car, I think....in fact it doesn't even look like a local state or country.  Wonder what's up?" and thinking about that weird episode with Merlin, she starts to get really worried.

"We'd better go put the horses up and check in on Sethie."

"Here, let me take them down to the barn," volunteers Lap, "tell Sethie, I'll be up soon, but he doesn't have to worry about waffles, okay? Riding horses always makes my tummy seasicky."

So, JB and NHT dismount, heading to the Lodge door, while Lap gathers up the reins and heads down to the barn, humming that old Joni Mitchell, "Yellow Taxi" song....wonder why it came to mind?

"They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

Lap and NHT headed for the Lodge to talk to Seth, leaving JB very contentedly currying the horses after their ride, making sure they had enough water, feed, and a couple more apples each.

As she and Lap hurried to the Lodge, NHT kept on puzzling over the things that were happening to her, and trying to figure out why they were only involving her, and not anyone else.  How in the world did she know how to paddle a canoe if she had never been in one before?  Or had she?  Was there a time in her youth when maybe her parents had taken her out and taught her to paddle?  Maybe the knowledge was really in her DNA, like she had jokingly told Lap.  While she was pondering over the paddling, she realized suddenly that as well as she knew JB, she was willing to bet that JB would just shrug and tell her it was no biggie, she had learned in one of her earlier lives.  NHT shook her head...in spite of JB telling her and Lap both that she was just an ol' country girl, sometimes she would come up with stuff that, well, didn't seem like an ol' country gal would know.

Then she heard Lap humming that song again, the same line, over and over and over:  "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot!"

"Lap, why are you humming that song?"

"Why, I don't really know.  It just sort of popped into my head.  I haven't thought of that in years," Lap replied.

"Huh," said Nay, "Merlin just told me that Seth had bad guys follow him here, altho Seth didn't know he did, and those guys, along with the alleged black witch with them, want to destroy all this Lodge property and build a casino.  Here!  Right here, this place we have loved for so long.  You know we've got to stop it, right?"

"OK, slick, you got any ideas as to just how we're gonna fight black magic, as well as bad guys who probably have bad guns to shoot us good guys with?"

"Well, uh, erm, uh, well...no, not right off hand," sighed Nay.  "Oh, good, you're back, JB.  Tell us, how are we gonna stop the bad guys and the black-magic witch from destroying all the Lodge property and building a casino?"

JB stopped dead in her tracks, staring at Nay.  "You're kidding, right?  You don't really think I know how to put a stop to forces like that, do you?  Pffffffftttttt, you better go find your pal Merlin and ask him, don't ya think?"

Today is the day that the Lord hath made; we shall rejoice and be glad in it.
