I just got my monthly magaizine from NorthShoreUniversity/LIJ hospital~ and one of the articles inside tweeked my interest.
It's about a new study that treats Chronic Migraines~I'm a suffer since age 6!!!!
49 years on/off can do something to a person!!!!
Here's the article:
Researchers at NorthShore-LIJ'sharvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience are recruiting patients to participate in a cliniccial research study for adults with chroinc migraine headaches. The study is testing the safety and effectiveness of a theraphy called
Peripheral nerve stimulation(PNS),which uses and implaned device to control pain.
"Chronic migraine headaches can be debilitating"said Alon Mogilner,MD,Phd.director of
functional and restorative neurosurgery at NorthShoreUniversityHospital(NSUH)
"In addition to severe headache pain, patients can suffer nausea, vomiting, and other symptoms that may interfere with work or school and other day-to-day activities"
The clinical research study is being conducted with the Genesis neurostimulator, and
investigional device developed by the St.Jude Medical Neuromodulation Division.
The Gensis device looks and operates similar to a cardiac pacemaker and is implanted
in ththe torso. Mild electricial pulses are delivered via thein, insulated wires connected at the base of the head to stimulate the occipital nerves.
A clininian programs the system to provide customiszed stimulation to meet patient's needs.
According to the National headache Foundation, approximatlely 28Million Americans suffer
from migraine headaches. A migraine headache is more than just a "bad headache".
The severity of each migraine can vary widly, althoughthe headache ususally begins as a
dull pain that can turn into a constant trobbing or pulsing sensation. Some individuals
who suffer from migraine headaches also experience nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light/noise.
"for those experiencing chronic migraines who do not respond to existing medicial treatment,PNS could be a new option"said Dr.Mogilner.
To participate in the chronic migraine study, patients must be at least 18 years or older to
have headaches that start in the back of thehead/ neck, have tried two migraine-specific medications that did adequately releive their symptoms and have had headache symptoms
for at least 15 days a month for at least three consecetive months.
NSU was selected as one of 15 sites in th United States to participate in the clinical research
study.Funding for the study is provided by St.Jude Medical, under a US Food and Drug
Adminstaation investigation device excemption.

This looks interesting for anyone who's suffered acute chronic migraines since they were a
child~my headaches began when I was 6.
