A short distance into the woods from the main byway,
a hand-hewn log lodge stands nestled in the trees,
barely visible to passers-by.
Nearby a rushing waterfall fills the area
with a wonderful, healing energy.

A fortress against a hectic world,
the sprawling, hidden lodge welcomes
the lonely and the tired,
afterward sending most on their way,
refreshed and fortified.
Sometimes deserted,
the lodge is the perfect place to retreat
from the world and be alone.
Other times it’s bustling with friends
sharing stories and laughter over a mug of hot cocoa.
Always, it’s exactly whatever a visitor needs to regain balance.
It’s presided over by an older caretaker couple,
Seth and Gwen,
who do it just because they love the company.

Seth and Gwen on their Wedding Day

Seth's fiercely proud of the lodge’s jewel –
the tall stone hearth that he built
to dominate the Great Room,
where everyone gathers.

And Gwen is everyone’s ideal mother,
whose main pleasure it is to dispense
stews and soups, breads and cookies
from the kitchen’s big brick oven and wood stove.
… comfort food at its best.
And magical – all sweets have no calories!! *lol*

Come on in and rest.
Stay an hour or a few days.
Meet friends here and chit chat –
Or stroll to the waterfall and visit with the wood folk.
Seth and Gwen’s only request?
Before entering their enchanted haven,
a visitor should share
one positive from his/her life today.
That’s what that book on the entry hall table is for,
to write that day’s positive thought in.
(But even when you can’t,
Seth and Gwen graciously understand
and invite you inside just the same,
knowing that when you leave,
you’ll be better for the visit -
although do be warned:
they’ve been known
to happily ask for two positives
the next time you visit. *lol*)

Slipping in quietly so as not to wake Gwen and Seth I write in the Gratitude Book "I am grateful I have my hubby to hold me and I am grateful to have this wonderful place to share with caring friends.

Thanks NHT.

Tiptoeing in after Joycie, to make sure that Gwen and Seth can sleep in, Lap makes her way into the Lodge.

Gratitude book - I'm glad it isn't rainy or gloomy at the Lodge. Perfect place to get my dose of sun shine.

Slipping through the kitchen for a day's supply of chocolate chip cookies and silk milk, I head over to one of my favorite hide outs at the Lodge.  The train track.  Yep, I've decided to keep my train set here, for others who also enjoy playing trains. *grins*

Heading home tonight, I pass the butterfly garden, and see this lovely fellow flitting about.

What a beautiful sight....the Lodge!  I finally make it here...after a few detours along the way.  I'm with you Lap, I'm trying to escape the tornados here in Alabama.  One touched down just a short distance from where I live.
I love the butterfly...wish I had time today to sit in the garden and enjoy the serenity.  I enjoy a cup of coffee with Gwen, then I'm off to start another work day.
May all who enter the Lodge today be blessed

In honor of the new board and the new Lodge, I wanted to bring a house warming present to Seth and Gwen.

A jade dragon for blessings and good luck to all who enter.

*NHT stops in briefly at The Lodge to see if everything’s okay - if anyone needs anything. On the door she finds a beautiful jade dragon... wow, so gorgeous! She wonders where it came from. Inside, she finds Gwen unpacking boxes of fall decorations, the dining table covered with the majesty of fall.*

“Well, look who the wind blew in,” says Gwen, shaking out garlands of silk coloured leaves. After the two friends hug, she says, “Gimme a hand here, will you? This one seems to be tangled.”

“Sure,” says NHT, taking the garland from Gwen and untangling it as her friend unpacks more decorations from the biggest box. "What a beautiful dragon! Where'd it come from?"

Gwen smiles. "That Lapatosu - she's such a sweetie! Isn't it just the loveliest? Seth hasn't seen it yet ... he's been out in the pumpkin patch looking for one for me to make into a pie - you know him, he always gets lost out there!"

NHT laughs. "He's going to love it when he sees it - you know how he loves dragons."

Gwen nods. "I think that's why Lap brought it by - she and he share a special connection."

"True enough," NHT replies, still wrestling with the knotted garland. "Boy this is really tight."

“Oh look,” Gwen says with a fondness in her voice, “do you remember when you gave me this candle? Seth thinks I’m crazy for not burning it – what good’s a candle, he says, if you don’t burn it. He chides me every year even though he knows that I just can’t bear to burn this one, it’s too pretty.”

Triumphantly NHT hands the finally untangled garland back to Gwen. “Yes, I remember. We were on that foliage trip through the Berkshires. Don't feel bad -I have one of those just-to-look-at candles too, a spring one, that my SO gives me blazes over for not burning …”

Both women giggle at the no-nonsense practicality of their menfolk.

Gwen unpacks a number of Indian corn bundles, tied together with autumn ribbons and looks them over. “Boy, these are getting old – some of the kernels have fallen out –“

“—They do that,” NHT interrupts, “like old people’s teeth.”

“’Doesn’t matter,” Gwen replies, missing NHT’s attempt at humour, too attentive to twisting the bow around the bundle. “See, I’ll just hang it this way and no-one will know.”

NHT smiles, knowing her friend’s sensibilities would never discard items of sentimentality no matter how old. She knew for a fact, her friend’s holiday boxes, even when unpacked, still contained the oldest of her items, given by her friends and family many years ago, but too age-worn to be displayed anymore.

“I wish I could stay and help decorate, but dinner beckons in RL,” says NHT.

“I understand,” Gwen tells her. ‘Besides, you know me, I’d rather do it alone, and surprise you next time you come.”

And with that, NHT is gone, leaving Gwen alone with her thoughts and memories.

It has been a ong day.  A good day, but I am ready to call it a day.

Gratitude book - I'm glad I was visited by wasp today.  My hand didn't swell much or anything.  I looked up the  totem message that wasp brings

"By observing the wasp we can learn how to shape shift our outer image and become more connected to our inner knowing."

Taking that thought with me, I head to the gazebo that Seth built for Gwen on their last anniversary.

So peaceful.

Looking up at the ceiling, I notice that it is in the shape of a mandala.

It is a full moon, or pretty close at the Lodge tonight.  Most of the leaves have fallen from the cottonwood trees, and it looks like one snagged it.  And this evening, the sun was setting as the moon was rising.  East of the sun, west of the moon is a very special place to walk.

I make my way to the gratitude book - I am grateful for the beautiful, still evening.  The only thing lacking is geese flying across the moon, but I have a filling if I wished for them hard enough, they would be there.

Gwen has some hot cider on the stove.  I think I'll pour myself some and head down to the labyrinth.  It will be interesting to see what appears on this magic blessed evening.

Tired and with a sore arm (I don't like shots), I make my way to the Lodge.

Gratitude Book - I am grateful that I did the gym workout, before I got the shot in the arm.

I hear Gwen in the kitchen, and heading in there, find she is peeling apples for some apple/oatmeal crisp.  Giving her a hug, I grab some apples and a peeler.  The sooner they are peeled, the sooner I get to eat some of the yummy stuff, but I think I will take them outside to get as much sun as possible before it sets.

Gwen smiles and waves me on my way as I head towards the fairy path.  I find a warm patch of sun and sitting down, get to serious peeling.  As I sit, I hear a soft murmuring somewhere close by.  Looking carefully,

I see two very tiny, very ancient looking wisemen by the root of a tree.  Listening in on their conversation, I continue to peel apples.

(They are complaining about the weather and the youth of today.)
